Eyestrain is another ergonomic problem frequently associated with the use of computers and Video Display Terminals (VDTs). Keep in mind that the solutions presented here are only recommendations. If following these recommendations seems to make matters worse, try something else! If you aren't experiencing headaches or eyestrain while you work at the computer, don't worry about making changes; obviously your setup works for you.

When people concentrate, they blink less often. Sometimes they concentrate so hard that they blink only once per minute, instead of the normal once every five seconds. This, too, will cause the eyes to dry out and become irritated. The Solution? Take micro-breaks! Frequently look up from your monitor and focus on an object several feet away. Make a conscious effort to blink. (see Eye Exercise)

Computer screen glare, inadequate room lighting and poor ergonomics are all known to contribute to eyestrain. The convergence of our eyes however is the main factor why we have computer-induced eyestrain. Every once in a while, change focus by glancing across the room or look out the window and focus on objects at least 20 feet away. Then, lightly cup your eyes with your palms, and relax for 60 seconds. Or, look away from the screen, and roll your eyes up and down, around and side to side. Eye Exams If you experience chronic eye problems, have your eyes examined by an eye care professional. If you work on a VDT, be sure to tell the doctor. Anyone who works regularly on VDTs should have annual eye exams, and people over age 40 may need more frequent checkups.

Invest in a special prismatic lens to reduce convergence demand on the eyes while we look at a near object such as a computer. The lenses are tinted to cut down glare and UV radiation, and they are non-magnifying. Most importantly, the prism feature of the lens will gently re-position our eyes to a more natural and comfortable position, relieving demand on eye muscles. This indirectly relaxes the focusing effort, providing a reduction in tension and enhancement of clearer vision.

Ten Simple Ways To Beat Computer Eyestrain

If you work in an office, do your eyes hurt by the end of the working day? You aren't alone: about 88% of all people who work with computers experience a type of eyestrain known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). After all, a computer screen isn't exactly the most natural thing to look at. Perhaps a couple of thousands of years of evolution would solve the problem but I am sure you aren't prepared to wait this long. Fortunately there are a few simple things you can do to minimize computer eyestrain.

1. From time to time look into the distance, to readjust the focus of your eyes

The human eye has trouble staying focused on computer images and text. Our eyes involuntary drift away, so we tend to force them to remain focused on the screen.

This flexing of the eyes' focusing muscles, all day long, is a real struggle for your eyes. So take your gaze away from the screen as often as possible. The key, here, is not to take long breaks but to take frequent breaks. Every few minutes look away from the screen and focus on a far away object - out the window, for example.

2. If you wear contact lenses, go for the best quality not the lowest price

Because computer users blink less often, their eyes tend to dry out, and some contact lenses contribute to this dryness even more. Ask your doctor to prescribe contact lenses that don't dry your eyes.

6. Whenever possible print pages for reading; don't read from the screen

Reading printed material is much less stressful, for your eyes, than reading from the screen. And you will be more productive too - it is a proven fact that people read printed text 25% faster than they read text from the computer screen.

7. Adjust the light

When working at the computer you don't need a very bright light. Direct sunlight and lighting in most offices are way to bright. Put the blinds down on a sunny day. It is best to turn your monitor so the window is on its side, not in front or behind it. Soft light of a desk lamp from the side is also an option. If the light in the office is too bright, you can wear tinted computer glasses.

8. Adjust the brightness of your monitor

The color white, on your computer screen, shouldn't shine like a light source. You can adjust the brightness of your monitor to a little bit below default. However, remember to keep the contrast high, otherwise it will be even more difficult for your eyes to stay focused.

9. Get your eye examined every 12 months

If you need vision correction it is important that your eyeglasses or contact lenses fit your needs. Wearing corrective eyewear that isn't up-to-date increases the stress on your eyes.

10. Ask your eye doctor about special computer glasses

These are usually multifocal glasses that help you to focus better on computer text. They can also be tinted, which helps if the lights in your office are too bright.

Follow these simple rules and you will notice that, by the end of the day, you won't feel so exhausted and your eyes won't hurt nearly as much, if at all.

Computer Kidnappers Target Your Files

Computer users have been inundated with warnings about viruses for years. Those dastardly, scheming bits of code that covertly enter a PC, and then perform the most nefarious of tasks ? up to and including infecting the computers of all the people in the resident address book. Virus infestations of computers have been responsible for shutting down entire companies, vast networks, government offices, and even the Internet.

After years of being cautioned regarding computer virus infestations, other types of unsavory and undesirable contaminants started to appear. As more and more threats arrived and received names, categories of threats had to be created. Today, the lexicon of nasty computer denizens is too vast for even the Geekiest of Geeks to fully know. To simplify the process of communication, a new general terms was born: 'malware.' Logically enough, it simply stands for 'malicious software.'

When the term malware was coined, it was to cover everything not previously named, but today, it is rapidly becoming an acceptable moniker for any software or program or macro or bho (browser helper object) that performs harmful processes to the host computer. This new nomenclature has made it much easier to communicate, but it has also left something of a hole in the general public's knowledge of protecting their computer system. For example, if anti-virus software is installed on a computer, is it safe from malware? The answer, by the way, is a resounding 'no.'

There are entirely too many types of malware, with way too many destructive tasks at their cores to mention in one article ? indeed, in one book. That's another way of saying that it is impossible to keep up with all the new malware releases. Fortunately for us mere mortals, the 'anti-hackers' stand steadfast at the gates of our PCs, ever vigilant for the newest attacks, and the ways to combat them. The 'anti-hackers,' by the way are those geeks who have not turned to the darkside. Without them, we'd be in the computer dark ages.

Malware comes and goes. It appears, the geeks or software protection companies find a 'fix,' and that's that. One piece of particularly irritating, as well as harmful, malware appeared a while back. One of the more notorious pieces of this malicious code was dubbed "Cryzip." The name actually has roots. This type of malicious software locates a group of files on your computer, zips them with a password and then insists on a ransom payment for the safe return of your files ? that's when you 'cry.' The term encompassing all of these types of software is 'ransomware.' Hardly as creative

The first generations of ransomware were relatively easy for authorities to stop. The person whose files were kidnapped was instructed to deposit money into an account ? anywhere from $50-300.00.

The newest generation of ransomware is trickier, and harder to stop. The computer is infected by a bad email, email attachment, or by visiting a website which downloads the unsavory code. The files being held will only be released when a certain dollar figure of purchases are made at a selected website, and then proof of those purchases is forwarded as instructed. I told you it was irritating. But when the vast majority of the worthwhile and/or valuable files from your computer are at stake, well ? that's the point.

The names of a couple of these new ransomware gems are 'Archiveus' and 'Troj/Ransom-A.' Both It infect your system in the traditional manners listed above. Here are a few basic rules for staying safer on the Internet:

? Don't open mail from unfamiliar address or names.
? Don't open attachments unless you're sure! (Your friend's system might be infected, and his computer is automatically sending you an email to infect your system too.)
? Set your email reader to read all mail in PLAIN TEXT. (This is GREAT security!)
? Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date and running ? including email scanning.

On the downside, you don't get to see graphics or photos, or colors, or type faces. Small price to pay so that I don't end up with a kidnapping note staring back at me from the screen.

How secure is your computer? Most of us have virus protection
and probably feel pretty safe. But how many know that there
can be many individuals out there who may be trying to snoop
(or actually snooping) around your hard disk all day long?
I would venture that there are not many sitting at their
computer right now who have even thought about it!

High speed access to the Internet, i.e. DSL, cable and a
couple of others have opened the doors to our work areas.
I had even recorded attacks on my computer when I was using
a local dial up service. The high speed access capability
is great, I know that from personal experience. But it does
open you up to extra risks since your Internet connection
is probably open all day, even when you are not using it.

Intrusions on the Internet are common because hackers do
frequent scans looking for systems they can break into. A
typical hacker may scan thousands. He or she isn't targeting
you personally. In the hour preceding the writing of this article
I had three attacks on my computer through my cable hookup.
Two were hackers probing to see if they could get in and the
other was a hacker checking to see if I had a specific Trojan
program that might have compromised my system so that they
could get in. This is a regular daily occurrence. Luckily my
system has a software (firewall) program that detects and stops
any attacks. It also logs in the attacks so that I can see what
they were. The program is called Black Ice Defender,
networkice.com and cost me about $40. It was
well worth the price. There are a number of programs out there
and one that seems to be generally recommended along with
Black Ice Defender is ZoneAlarm zonelabs.com
which happens to be free (free for personal and non-profit use).

A while back I had read several articles in PC Magazine about
these risks and that was what made me get a copy of Black
Ice. By the way it is easy to install and use. I don't know about
ZoneAlarm but from my readings it appears it is also fairly
simple. One of the ezines I subscribe to recently had a short
article about a site called "Shields UP!" where you could go
to check your computer security for free. If you are interested

These tests are for Windows systems. There will be two
buttons, "Test My Shields" and Probe My Ports". These tests
take a couple of minutes each and they will give you a full report.
When I was finished, I felt pretty good for the moment since
they couldn't get into my machine. In fact they evaluated it as
"appearing that my computer didn't even exist".

You can sit there and say that you are only a little guy or gal,
who would even try? Well that may be so, but on the other hand,
do you know exactly what you have saved on your computer -
credit card numbers, account numbers, personal information...?
You would be amazed at the number of files that are saved on
your machine by windows and other programs that you aren't
even aware of.

I have had to change credit card accounts twice in the last year
due to some large well known companies who's systems were
attacked and credit card files were compromised. So it can
happen, even to the big guys. The software is out there to help
you, it can be free or relatively inexpensive. Why not feel a little
more secure?

We live in something called the world of electronics. Okay, maybe I just coined that phrase, but it sounds legit, doesn't it? I mean, think about it, we use machines and electronics for everything from ordering a pizza, to sending a letter. How did we ever exist without them? This is the prime reason why everyone should acquire some basic computer training. Think of all the jobs these days that require basic computer training. Better yet, ponder all the ones that don't. It's much easier.

My sophomore year of college, I took a class on computer fundamentals. I figured this would come in handy sooner or later, and especially after school. Well, it actually came in handy earlier than expected. Not long after the basic computer training course, I obtained a job where the skills were necessary. Even part-time high school and college jobs require basic computer training. I spent three years working for a video store chain. Most of the time I was on a computer. I bartended at a fancy hotel for a year. All money was handled through a computer system. Not many people use the old-school cash registers anymore. Basic computer training has simply become part of our standard environment. Everyone coming out of college these days is expected to have some basic computer training at the least.

How often do you use a computer on a daily basis? When you check your email, when you go to the grocery store, checking the bank account, or possible purchasing a gift online; these are common occasions when we use computers. I have found it very useful in my everyday life to fully understand Microsoft Office. These are some of the most common software programs used in our society today. This is certainly considered basic computer training. I find it useful to understand computers as best I can. Since I write on a Mac G4Ibook regularly, I prefer to fully comprehend its functions so I don't have to always call for help if something goes aloof.

Credit Policy - Rules For Successful Computer Consultants

Credit policies need to be set to protect yourself from non-payment. If you make sure you have clear credit policies from the start you will reduce your risk of nonpayment. To do this there are a few simple rules you should follow:

Rules For Credit Policies

With every written credit policy, include two or three sentences that explain credit is granted subject to credit approval. This way if you grant credit you always leave yourself an out if they refuse to give you a credit application, the credit application is incomplete, or you do a credit check on them and they have horrendous credit. You MUST be able to refuse credit.

Insist on getting a deposit check with the credit application. This credit policy allows you to assess ability and willingness to pay by making sure the check does not bounce.

Your credit policy must ensure you get a complete reference and credit check for each applicant. If you are dealing with brand new businesses that do not have a credit history then your credit policy should maintain that these contracts are done with a credit card. Don't take the chance.

When establishing your credit policy make sure you do to the reference checks. You'd be amazed at some of the things that come back.

Last rule for credit policies; be really conservative with your lines of credit. You can always extend lines of credit, but you can't cut lines of credit without damaging the relationship. Start low and end high.

The Bottom Line on Credit Policies

Credit polices are set for your protection. Granting credit is a client convenience but ultimately you only want clients that pay you. When you establish your credit policies make sure you cover off these simple rules. They will ensure you get paid and that you remain in business long enough to grant lots of worthy credit.

We get asked all the time what things you can do to prolong the life of your system and keep it running in top shape. We have put together a short list of our favorite tips to help you maximize that investment of yours. Use these tips to keep your system cool, running fast, and lasting longer.

I Thought I Saw A Bunny Wabbit

The main enemy of your computer is heat. Heat will destroy a computer given a high enough temperature or a long enough duration. When you machine is nice and new, heat shouldn't be a problem is a well designed system. Well, if it isn't a problem when you bought it, why is it a problem now? The answer are two simple words: dust bunnies

Those pesky dust bunnies will multiply in the sanctity of your computer case like real rabbts in the wild. The dust will build up on the components and cooling fins trapping in heat. Now I know that now self respecting computer stud wants to ask the wife to borrow the dust buster, heaven knows you might get trapped into cleaning something else while you are at it. In our book, the best cleaning is to take the machine outside, remove the side panel, and use a good air compressor or canned air to clean off all of the components. Be sure and use the little straw to get deep into the power supply. More power supplies are lost every year to dust buildup than any other cause. Before putting the cover back on, check all the cards and RAM to make sure it is seated well.

Do The Defrag

When do you defragment your drive? This is an age old question that I will put to rest right here and now. You do NOT need to defragment your drive every day, nor every week, and many people don't need to even do it once a month. It really just depends on how much your use your system. We reecommend a defragmentation about once a month. In an upcoming article, we will actually show you how to automate this process.

Backup

Enough said. If you are not backing up your data on a regular basis, then paint your face, put on a funny wig and a rubber nose and hang out with Bozo, cause a fool you are. Read this sentance carefully: your hardrive will die someday...period. It is only a matter of when. how often should you back up? That depends again, how far back to you want to go when your hard drive dies and all of your data is gone? Every business should be backing up their data monday through friday, preferably with the ability to go back to any day's backup for at least two weeks.

Whose got the power?

One of the most overlooked problems that will reduce a perfectly good computer to a pile of rubble in no time flat is the quality of the power coming into the system. If the power fluctuates up and down even a small amount, it puts a tremendous strain on the power supply to filter it and deliver clean power to the system components. At minimum you want a good surge suppressor. I am not talking about the $2.99 hardware store specials, I am talking about a good quality, brand name (like Belkin) surge suppresor. If you spend less than $20 on it, it is not providing adequate protection. If you really want ensure good quality power to your system, invest in even a small battery backup system. A small UPS will smooth out the power spikes and drops end deliver smooth, consistent power to your system.

Computer Forensics is the scientific study of computers or computer related data in relation to an investigation by a law enforcement agency for use in a court of law. While this technology may be as old as computers themselves, the advances in technology are constantly revising the science of computer forensics.

In the technological old days, computer forensics was mostly related to data dumps, printing out every keystroke that had been logged on a computer in a series of eight digits, all of them zeroes and ones. Literally cases of paper would be used for the printing of the materials. Systems analysts would then have to convert all of the data into hex and then translate the value into whatever the actual keystroke was. In this way, it was possible to go over all of the data and figure out at what point the computer and the corresponding program crashed. Like computers and technology, Computer forensics has evolved by leaps and bounds since those days of old.

While all computer language still ultimately boils down to ones and zeroes or binary and then hex, the means by which programs are created, run and utilized has changed drastically. Computer forensics has done well to keep up with the task at hand. Now hard drives can be wiped clean. However, without an unconditional format (and in rare cases, even with the unconditional switch) the data can still be retrieved. It takes an expert in computer forensics however. It takes someone who is familiar with the technology of the computer and the science of computer forensics to reconstruct all of the data that has been wiped off of the hard drive.

Computer forensics can be used to track emails, instant messaging and just about any other form of computer related communications. This can be necessary, especially in the world today. Computer forensics experts have even advanced the technology to the point that they can track data real time, or while it is actually being sent and received. This is a mind-numbing task when you think about the billions of communications going on around the globe at any given time, but the science of computer forensics is constantly advancing every bit as quickly or sometimes even faster than the technology they are responsible for investigating.

OnAir GT Hybridizes Computers And TV's

Many people in the computer industry believe that TV- at least in the traditional sense- is dead. While this may be somewhat of an extreme view, it's certainly becoming more common to get TV programming and movies from online sources than it used to be. It's also far more common to watch TV programming, both TV shows and movies, on devices other than a traditional TV (or an HDTV) in the living room. Computers and portable devices, including even some types of mobile phones, are increasingly being used to watch video.

Because of the increase in popularity of watching TV on mobile devices, a whole new genre of gadgets has cropped up that can be plugged into lap top computers and home computers that will allow them to receive TV broadcasts over the air and for their users to watch that programming on their computer screens. One of these gadgets is called the OnAir GT and it's made by AutumnWave.

The OnAir GT has a whole bunch of features that make it, and the computer that it's plugged into, extremely versatile for watching TV. The device itself is pretty much a phenomenally compact USB device that can plug into a Windows based computer and, along with special software that comes with the OnAir GT, display the TV programming on the screen. The OnAir GT can receive both analog and digital programming over the air, and even be used to watch HDTV programming. (Although you presumably need an High Definition computer screen on your computer in order to get the most out of the HDTV programming.)

The device can provide video resolutions ranging from standard definition television all the way up to High Definition resolutions as high as one thousand and eighty horizontal lines of resolution. In addition to getting video from over the air programming, the OnAir GT can also be plugged into a cable jack to receive unencrypted cable TV. As another additional feature, the software that comes with this gadget is capable of turning a computer into a digital video recorder and then playing back the recordings at some point in the future when over the air TV isn't available.

One disadvantage of the OnAir GT is that it's only compatible with Windows based computers. Users of Apple computers and people who insist on using the Linux operating system are pretty much out of luck. That said, this device has an advantage over other similar devices in that it doesn't require that the computer have as much power. For example, the OnAir GT will work with computers with as little as 128 megabytes of RAM and processor speeds as low as 800 megahertz (if it's the right kind of processor). Of course, significantly faster processors and 256 megabytes of RAM are recommended.

The OnAir GT also has variety of user friendly features. For example, it allows you to watch TV as the wallpaper of your computer desktop or capture images from video to use as wallpaper. It's also based on USB technology, so it's compact to transport, easy to plug in, and is completely powered off of the computer that it's plugged into. It also comes with a remote control, so you don't have to be a foot away from the screen to use it.

In all the OnAir GT can add a lot of value to your computer in a location that can receive over the air TV signals.

How Safe is Your Critical Business Data on Your Computer System?

Network security company, Internet Security Systems, recently issued a report stating that "security events" (an "event" being anything from a computer virus to a major attack on your computer network) increased by more than 80% in the first quarter of this year compared with the previous three months.

This may be alarming to any small business who works with a computer, but the number of small businesses who base their business on computers must be particularly alarmed.

Rather then being alarmed, a better course may be to become aware. To ask what measures you can take to protect the important information that you have stored on your office computers. Then what measures that you can take to shield your small office computer systems and data from harm.

All good computer data security begins with a regularly scheduled data backup plan. Your own businesses' "Backup or lose it Plan". All data critical to the running of your business on desktop PCs and notebooks must be backed up regularly. If it is daily, weekly, or monthly, depends on your business, as long as your business data is backed-up regularly.

Make sure you implement and stick with an automated backup system, where you regularly monitor the log files and run test restore jobs. Also be sure to invest in a substantial media rotation plan and rotate your backup media off site on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.

Virus Detection

To aid you in maintaining your computer, invest in a good utility software package that includes a computer virus detection utility. Both Norton and McAfee are good packages for this purpose.

If you have not installed a virus scanning utility on your computer, especially if you have a live DSL or cable Internet access -- do it A.S.A.P. Your computer system is susceptible to outsiders probing your computer files or transmitting a virus to your computer system. With one of these Internet connections, you must be even more vigilant.

Be sure to go online and update virus scanning utility on a regular bases so that you can protect your system from the latest computer virus circulating. New viruses circulate the Internet daily and you will not be fully protected unless your virus detection software is as current as possible.

Another basic virus protection tip -- most computer viruses are transmitted via email attachments. Thus, do not open email attachments from email addresses that you do not know.

If you are running under a Microsoft Windows Operating System, make sure your systems are current on the latest Microsoft patches, services packs, and hot fixes. The Microsoft Windows Update and Microsoft Office Update websites are a great starting points.

In addition, you can get a quick pulse on your PC's basic security readiness with the Microsoft Personal Security Advisor.

Disgruntled Employees

There is also another potential threat to your data -- a disgruntled employee. Employees should be included in any data security policy.

Research has shown the greatest threat to a business's security is from its own staff. Some businesses forget to ensure that policy and procedures are set up to protect against potential threats such as e-mail viruses, internet misuse and mishandling of personal and private data, which can all lead to an attack on the company's security, not to mention a mark on its reputation.

The key is to be able to protect your data without alienating your staff.

On this point, if you have not done so, include an external security audit to your security plan. The audit is an ongoing process and should be undertaken annually or biannually or following significant change within your business that may affect security (a disgruntled key employee leaving, office break-in, etc.).

Legal and Insurance

People also need to be audited as well. It is also important to make an audit of each user's authorization and privilege level so confidentiality of business information is secured and maintained. If this policy is adhered to, then security risks will be greatly reduced.

Computer and internet use policies have become popular to various businesses. Many such policies are written into the employment contract of the employee, and you may be wise to seek legal advice on this subject.

There is legislation that covers data and information security, including the Data Protection Act. The act requires you to provide adequate protection for data you hold on your computers. Every situation is different, and it's vital to get appropriate legal advice, as there are several laws that cover computer use that may be relevant to your situation.

Lastly, become aware of what is covered by your commercial business insurance. At the very least, make sure that you are in some way covered.

Whatever your business situation, data security are a complex issue the potential for disruption, to both to you and your business may be alarming.

Are You Being Mislead By Your Current Computer Dealer?

You've seen the ads - FREE PRINTER OR WEB CAM (with the purchase of a computer), or how about where one retailer is selling their computer for just $999 with a $500 mail-in rebate (that you may or may not ever get) if you sign up for 3-year Internet access. How about the dude that advertises the $599 machine, but when you visit the website, you discover that you have to be a rocket scientist to find that same offer. Or what about the $499 computer - that's a great one. It doesn't have a floppy drive, nor does it come with a network card. To make matters even worse, you can't even add those features. But the one that gets my goat the most are those darn blue guys - you know the guys I'm talking about. Intel has spent millions of dollars trying to convince you that you can do more if you have the latest and greatest cazillion speed computer with one of their processors inside.

The truth of the matter is that there are very few software programs that actually do take advantage of the performance gains that make the Pentium 4 processor the technological marvel that it is. So few, in fact, that Intel actually tracks those 62 programs on their website. Granted, there are a few areas where a computer with a Pentium 4 really does "shine" -- gaming, photography, video and music come to mind. In other words, if the main reason you have your computer is to play Warcraft III Reign of Chaos, or if you are looking to burn downloaded Internet music to a cd-rom, then you may just be the perfect candidate for a computer with a Pentium 4 processor in it. For the rest us, though, spending that unnecessary money can only be considered a luxury.

Use WinUtilities to Optimize Your Computer

WinUtilities
allows you to delete your application and

internet history, find and remove invalid registry entries, manage your
cookies and more.

The operation system requests constant care if you want to keep your computer
in tip-top condition. There are myriad softwares out there that can do that.
There are many things to take care of - like cleaning the registry entries,
history folder, shortcuts, startup etc. - for which you can use different stand
alone softwares or you can choose one that has all these and more included.

I will talk about a software that includes all of the above mentioned options
and many more. It is a suite of utilities that will maintain your computer so
that it won't run slow or worse...freeze. The software was baptized with the name
of WinUtilities so that everyone knows that it contains Windows tools. The
developer is XP-Tools and
the installation file "weighs" only 4.30MB. The price for acquiring this Windows
toolkit is $39.99.

The software is designed to

optimize the performance of your computer and to remove the files you no
longer need, get rid of invalid registry entries, cookies, clean your startup.
It will help the user remove or repair broken shortcuts, backup and restore your
registry etc. Let's see how it actually works.

The interface is clean and simple. It contains only the options you need to
maintain your computer. The main menus are displayed vertically, on the left
side of the application window, and their submenus will occupy the rest of the
application. When selected, every submenu will pop up a window containing all
the settings.

The main menus are System Cleaners, System Optimizers, System Control, System
Tools, Registry Tools and File Tools.

System Cleaners contains four submenus designed to clean the disk of the junk
files like temporary data and invalid entries. Its purpose is to clean the
system of the files missed by the regular uninstallers, defragmenters, etc.
There are tens of options in here, so I will not take each and every one of them
and explain it. After selecting the folders or drives that you want to scan, go
into Options (at the bottom of the window) and make your settings for Junk
Files, Search Options, add the folders you don't want to be scanned, and also
take a look at the Cleaning Options tab (you can create a restore point before
deleting the junk). Advanced Options will also present you with 13 settings
(clean clipboard, Internet temp files, recent run history, search computer
registry, etc.).

We are still in the System Cleaner and the next submenu is the Registry
Cleaner. You have to select the items you want to be examined
(user/common/system settings, uninstall section, etc.). Things are much simpler
in here as, after making your choices, the system will proceed directly to
scanning your Windows Registry.

The History Cleaner will allow you to protect your privacy by removing the
unnecessary Internet files and unwanted data. I must say that the Wash My
Computer Now option does not sound too appealing, but, if you take the right
decision, the result will be quite comforting. The Task Scheduler allows you to
configure tasks to run automatically and you won't have to run WinUtilities
every time. It will perform the action at the specified time.

In System Optimizers, the submenus are not as abundant as in the previous
section, and the range of options is not even close. Thus, in the Memory
Optimizer, you can make the settings only to enable auto optimization and for
the manual optimization. The other two submenus are to be used to get rid of
left behind shortcuts and duplicate files.

System Control comes hard from behind with options like System Control
(organize and manage Windows settings) which comprises Configuration Files,
Environment (with User variables, system variables, MS-DOS environment and the
Special Folders), OEM Information (which allows you to customize the OS
registration information displayed in System Properties), Control Panel and Auto
Shutdown (schedule computer to log off, stand by, hibernate, or shutdown at a
user specified time).

The BHO (Browser Help Objects) remover will list all the installed BHOs and
will allow you to remove the ones you do not want to keep. The Shutdown utility
comes in handy when you want to schedule your computer for log off, shutdown,
hibernate or stand by at a certain time.

In System Tools, the developer has incorporated instruments designed to
manage the running processes (Process Manager), uninstall the applications you
no longer need (Uninstall Manager), provide comprehensive information on your
computer (System Information tool) or launch the Windows Tools. The Process
Manager is the most important in my opinion, as it will offer you info on CPU,
Page File and Physical Memory usage and the Virtual Address Space. You will also
have access to the running processes and you can kill them at whim.

The Registry Tools menu covers Registry Backup/Restore and Search submenus.
Thus you can create backups for your registry, in case you do something wrong.
If you want to look for a particular element in the registry, all you have to do
is use the Search option which comes with search parameters you can configure by
yourself according to your needs.

The last menu in the list is File Tools, which covers file related options
like File Shredder (that permanently removes the files on your computer) that
allows you to choose the method by which the files will be overwritten before
deletion (Single Pass, 3 Passes, NSA- seven passes or Guttman - 35 passes). The
File Splitter will cut a file into smaller pieces, so that you can send it with
greater ease. The EXE Protector option will allow you to protect any Windows
.exe file by applying a password.

The Good

The software is a suite of Windows utilities that will help you keep your
computer in good shape. The bundle of tools is amazing and the ease of use makes
the software a "must have" for every computer owner that cares about his/her
machine.

The Bad

All the software needs is a defragmenting tool, even if Windows has a
built-in utility that does this job.

The developers may consider revising the spelling in the description of the
utilities.

The interface's skins are three, but I did not see too much of a difference,
except for the title bar.

The Truth

The software is worth more than a shot. It does its job with a sense of
responsibility you rarely encounter in other similar softwares. And the
investment will turn out to be a good one.

Part of our everyday lives, computers have evolved from a tool at work to a personal calendar, a friendly network facilitator and a necessary guide. Although computers have transformed the way we see things and understand the world around us, because their use imposes physical and mental demands on their users, it leads to several health problems, like Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs), eye strain, neck and lower back pains and headaches.

I do not about you, but when I bought a year ago my brand new laptop, I was extremely interested in reading everything included in the package in an effort to take good care of my precious new possession. One of the documents the producer have included in the printed materials I opened to read, was one that directed me to follow specific guidelines on how to effectively and safely use my portable PC. Perhaps I was very lucky, as I later discovered that only recently have manufacturers been forced to include such user guides, or began making an effort to overcome health related issues and complains by introducing ergonomic products and warning labels on some equipment. This is very important, as the designers' ability to understand that users need simple guidelines in order to be adequately informed of the risks involved and trained on proper body posture, monitor height, elbows distance from the body or recommended hours of use, can prevent computer users, even young, physically active individuals, from suffering in the future.

Specifically, one has to be aware of the hazards of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) to the hands and arms resulting from inappropriate use of the computer's keyboard and mice. People in a variety of professions, like musicians or chiropractics, who repeatedly exercised pressure on their hands, shoulders, and arms, and have injured their tendons, muscles, and nerves, have been reported as the first cases of RSIs victims. Unfortunately, the list is increasing today, as more and more computer users request medical treatments in order to overcome the symptoms of RSIs on their hands, wrists, arms, shoulders and necks. Medical professionals and patients have reported that tightness, discomfort, stiffness, soreness or burning, numbness, and loss of coordination or strength are the most common symptoms linked to RSIs.

Since this serious painful situation is far easier to prevent than to cure once contracted, it is important for people to be educated and understand when and how RSIs can occur leaving ex-computer users permanently disabled and unable to perform simple tasks, such as driving or even dressing, without requesting help. Ergonomic gadgets, palm rests, maintaining the right posture and overall good working habits can reduce the risks associated with computer use and help young users understand how important it is to be always on alert for RSIs symptoms.

How Safe Is Your Computer?

If you surf the web, you can be sure that you face the ongoing risk of spyware or adware. It is time you updated your antispyware programs to keep your PC healthy. But first let us briefly examine the most common types of spyware.

Gone are the days when viruses were expected only via our email. Now we don't even have to click a link to be infected. All we have to do is browse the Internet, and it's an open invitation to spyware. Spyware constitutes those programs that are deliberately lodged in your computer without your approval or knowledge. You can never live without spyware and adware protection.

Types Of Spyware

Adware is the worst form of spyware. These programs lay in wait for you to connect to the Internet and then they send you popups that give you all kinds of offers. And while you are thinking how considerate those websites are, these fake popups are actually recording your viewing habits and smuggling them off to marketing companies who sell you junk.

Another irritating form of spyware is the browser hijacker. After installing themselves on your PC, they just change your default homepage and search engine. When you start your web browser, you'll find that you are flooded with ads, porn and other stuff you don't want. The scary part of this is that they mine data - which means they report your surfing habits to someone who uses the information unethically.

Keyboard loggers are thieves who steal your PIN number when you bank online. They get your passwords. This means, without spyware protection, your personal information and assets can be stolen. Then there are Diallers that enter your PC through a virus infection, adult websites, warez, or even MP3s. A dialler is software that dials numbers at premium rates when you are not around and you end up with bills for thousands of dollars.

If you use file-sharing programs, while installing it, spyware also gets installed, unless you read your end user agreements carefully or have antispyware software installed to keep these Trojans away. Imagine having every keystroke recorded, and your private instant messages, emails and other conversations being logged and reported elsewhere without you knowing about it! No - not the best situation to be in! So, never be without spyware protection.

Is There Freedom From Spyware?

The only way to escape spyware or at least minimize its effects is to install antispyware software on your pc. Some programs just remove the spyware but cannot prevent new spyware from coming into your pc. Get firewall software, if you use broadband or high-speed connections. Avoid clicking on links that promise you free movies, prizes, free software etc. Update your antispyware program and scan your PC regularly.

8 Things to Consider when Buying a Laptop Computer

1. The ports. You should make sure that laptop has lots of USB ports for devices such as printer, mouse, flash drive, digital camera, etc. If your laptop does not come with many USB ports, you will need an USB hub. If you plan to connect your laptop to a TV, you will need an s-video port.

2. CD/DVD. Most of laptops come with a CD writerDVD reader drive. If you want to copy DVDs, you will need a DVD writer drive. At this time the maximum speed for burning a DVD is 16X.

3. The hard drive. The speed of hard drive is measured in rpm or Rotations per Minute. Try to find a laptop that has 4200rpm or 5400rpm. A laptop with 40 Gigabytes is sufficient for an average person.

4. The memory. Your laptop should have at least 1 GB of memory. However, you can get a notebook with 512 MB and work with Windows XP. You should avoid a laptop with only 256 MB of memory.

5. The processor. You can choose between Intel and AMD. At the moment, Intel has the best processor for a laptop called the Core 2 Duo. The speed of processors is measured in Gigahertz. The bigger the number, the faster the processor is. There are also Dual-Core processors. It means they can process two things at the same time. As a result, the power of the processor is doubled.

6. Size. You should choose a smaller screen if you carry your laptop a lot. Typically a 14.1 inch screen is considered small. A 17 inch screen is considered big. A 17 inch screen is heavier and use up more battery life. You can get a 15 inch or a 15.4 inch.

7. The warranty. Each laptop computer should come with one year warranty from the manufacturer covering only defective equipment. You can also get an extended warrantycovering any accidents you may have.

8. The brand. Average brand of laptop is Dell, HP, Gateway, Acer and Compaq. The better brand of laptops is Sony, Toshiba, Alienware and IBM-Lenovo.

A big question, especially among newly established computer consulting professionals is this: "I have some smaller clients with two to five PCs. Are Micro Clients Taking Up Too Much of Your Time?

Many computer consulting professionals have told us that they are spending so much time taking care of running and operating a store that it's very difficult to find the time to read marketing books and learn other new skills, then get out and practice them.

If you have enough time to devote to the marketing of your computer consulting business and servicing your sweet spot clients, So to the extent that you have time to do all this and you can fit it all in, that's fine.

When was the last time you threatened to throw your computer through the window?

When was the last time you freaked out because you got unexpected or undesired results from your computer?

When was the last time someone reminded you that it's only a computer and it only does what you tell it to do most of the time?

This is an issue we struggle with daily someone pushes a few keys, clicks a few buttons and expects that the computer will give them what they want, regardless of whether they pushed the RIGHT keys or clicked the RIGHT buttons, or did either of those things in the RIGHT order. Then, when they don't get what they were expecting they start yelling at the "stupid computer" and cursing the day they first bought it.

I'm just here to remind you today that "It's only a computer!"

It does what you tell it to do. Yes, I know, you don't tell it to crash or freeze or dump your physical memory, but "it's only a computer" and those are the only ways it can cope with the overload when you ask it to use more power or more memory or more processing capacity than it has.

So, how do you deal with the frustration????

Back away from the computer.

Take a deep breath.

Remember, it's only a computer. A machine with a little itty, bitty logical brain that only knows 0's and 1's and which order it's supposed to process them in. If you start giving it 2's and 7's or enough 0's and 1's to choke a brontosaur all at one time, it's gonna just tell you to fly a kite (also known as "blue screen of death").

I often have to remind the other people who use my computers to SLOW DOWN "Patience, grasshopper" is a regular phrase heard in my office! When you try to overwork your tool, just like using a single speed drill to build a whole house, you'll find that it dies or overheats or backfires once in a while.

So. Keep your tools up to date, and up to the tasks you're asking of them. Buy more memory (RAM), or a bigger hard drive, or a faster processor, or a new motherboard get up to date versions of your software. And remember IT'S ONLY A COMPUTER.

Life is too short to let technology ruin your day.

Failures aren't born. They're made. So are successes. Studies have shown that defining success is the first step to achieving it. This means defining success for you, in your terms. People who don't have a personal definition of success feel less successful and less satisfied in their lives. They also earn less money.

If your life is not guided by a plan with goals you create, it will be guided by a default plan, a plan created by your past conditioning and others' expectations of you.

Some people resist the idea of a plan for their lives because they think its something rigid. But having a plan is EXACTLY what allows you to take advantage of serendipity, the un- expected, new opportunities.

Your plan consists of your goals in major areas of your life. Your goals allow you to recognize and take advantage of the unexpected when it shows up in your life.

Just think: If you took only 1 baby step each day toward your priority goal in the next month, by the end of the month you'd be 30 steps closer to your goal!

It's only baby steps you need to take to reach your goal. Not giant leaps, not overnight success, not massive time each day.

People set themselves up for failure by thinking that they have to devote huge chunks of time to their major goal each day. Not so. It's the progress toward that goal that counts, the consistent and persistent action done in little chunks on a regular basis.

If you haven't been exercising, would you just go out and run 10 miles? Some people make this mistake by setting unrealistic actions each day: the goal isn't unrealistic, the daily actions are.

In addition, you want the FEELING that progress gives you, the energy and momentum that little daily actions give you. You want to stay motivated.

That's why baby steps work.

How little is a baby step? In your first month of moving toward your goal, a baby step is the SMALLEST action you can do in 10-15 minutes each day. Not 30 minutes, only 10-15 minutes each day.

What can you do today in 10-15 minutes to take a step toward your priority goal?

Here are some ideas:

* Brainstorm a list of all actions you *COULD* take toward your goal. Later, identify those priority actions that will only take 10-15 minutes for the next 30 days.

* Make a list of people to call who can give you some on-target information about your goal.

* Make 1 phone call that moves you toward your goal.

* Write the challenges you expect to face in reaching your goal.

* Each day, write how you can handle each challenge (reduce it, avoid it, break through it, get support, etc.)

* Read something for 15 minutes related to your goal.

* Schedule a future meeting with a person or group related to your goal. (Yes, the meeting itself will take longer than 10 or 15 minutes but scheduling it won't.)

Start your daily habit of progressing toward your priority goal with only 10-15 minutes each day. You CAN take these baby steps!:-)

Optimizing for the search engines doesn't have to be a tough job. But you need to pay attention to detail. It is often the little things that you do to your pages that will improve your ranking in the search engines. Sometimes, it's also the little things that can get you banned from the same search engines. Pay close attention. First we will cover some things you can do to improve your ranking. Then we will get into what not to do.

* Did you know that some search engines read the alt tags in your images? You don't have alt tags? Better include them in all your images. These tags were originally meant for browers that don't support images. This way, people with older browsers would have an idea of what the image is about. However, you can place keywords in these tags. Use 2 or 3 word keyword phrases, as this is what most people search for. If your site does not have images, Don't despair. You can use a 1x1 pixel clear image, (which doesn't show up on your page) just to give yourself a place to include the alt tag. Use these images as spacers.

* Your pages are probably peppered with headlines here and there. Instead of just using a larger font size for these headlines, use header tags instead. ( H1, H2, etc.) Search engines think that the most important information is in the header tags. Be sure to place your most important keywords here. If you don't have headlines on your site, start using them. This is better than meta keywords!

* The most important meta tag is the title tag. Your title tag is within the head tag. It is what shows up on your search engine listing and in the title bar at the top of your browser window. It is a must that you place your very best keywords here. Don't just put keywords in the title tag. It must make sense. Most search engines put a very stong emphasis on the title tag. Get it right and get listed.

* Use comment tags throughout you pages, especially near the top. The search engines like to read these, and by having keywords, keyword phrases, and other pertinent data here you will boost your ranking. Comment tags do not show up on your page. They only appear in the code. A comment tag begins with !--- and ends with --- Be sure to leave a space between the tags and the text.

* Probably the best boost in ranking that you can give yourself is a domain name. Some search engines won't index your site if you don't have a domain name, and they put a lot of weight on your domain name. Do you know what your domain name should be? *Your very top keyword or phrase.* Preferably something short and memorable. Don't get cute with domain names by using numbers and letters for words (u for you, 4 for for, 2 for to). Keep it simple so it makes sense to the search engines.

Now lets consider some things that can get you banned from the search engines, so pay close attention. These could be more important than the things you should do.

* DO NOT use text that is the same color as the background. Now this can get tricky. Some people have inadvertently broken this rule and don't know why they were banned. Lets say your site has a white background. So obviously you won't use white text. But what if you have a table on a page that has a black background and you use white text in this table? The search engines don't know the table has a different background. They only know that the page background is white, and suddenly here is white text. Oops! So make the text the palest gray you can. It will still look white to the viewer, but the search engines will know that its a different color from the background.

* DO NOT hide teeny tiny text somewhere on you page. The search engines know the viewer can't see it, and that you are trying to trick the search engines.

* DO NOT use keywords in your meta tags that are irrelevant. some people try to use 'the most searched for words' in their meta tags.... such as, sex, MP3, etc. You get the picture. Just stick to keywords that are related to your product or service. Remember that the search engines read the content of the page, so if you have keywords that do NOT show up in the content, you are likely to be ignored by the search engines. It doesn't make the viewers happy either, if they land on an irrelevant site.

* DO NOT use flash movies, frames, java applets, or image maps. You will choke the spiders to death. This is just garbage to them. They can't read it and can't index it. IT'S TIME TO STOP

Knowing when and what to stop is essential if we are to live a life of excellence.

For instance, it may good for me to...

Stop long enough to make reflection meaningful.

Stop selected activities if I am going to spend time with my family or those I love.

Stop and take the needed rest before I am *forced* to slow down because I am too worn out to do anything else.

Stop one activity and replace it with another one that will allow me to make a simple step toward accomplishing the very special dream I've had for years.

Stop and say "I love you," "I'm here to help," or "Thank you."

Sometimes we need to stop long enough to truly "see" what is taking place in our lives and make changes.

I know. I've been there. Years ago a friend of mine brought me into his office, looked me directly in the eyes, and confronted me. It was rough -- but needed. I'm a better person today because I had to face some hard facts about myself.

If I'm hurting others by my words or actions, then it's time to stop.

If I'm engaged in some sort of self destructive behavior, then I need to stop long enough to get help.

Maybe it's time for the bitterness, selfishness, lying, stealing or anger to stop. I'm especially sensitive to the latter -- anger. One of the most horrifying events I witnessed this past year was the result of a husband's uncontrolled anger directed toward his wife and family.

IT'S TIME TO ENJOY

The simple things. The little things. One of my daughters wrote a note to me a while ago, and in the note she reminded me to "take time to enjoy the simple things, dad."

A good reminder. It was a good reminder for me at the time. It is still a good reminder for me.

In addition, you may want to take time to enjoy...

The fun things. Things that you make you laugh or smile. The laughter of others.

The kindness you have been shown by a person who is close -- or not so close -- to you.

The fact that someone is praying for you and how meaningful those prayers are to you.

Children and their joy of discovery.

Colors, the changing of the seasons, landscapes, nature, a book, the "feel good" movie you have wanted to see, the walk you haven't taken for a while, a meal you would normally rush through, the musical that always lifts your spirits (Beauty and the Beast or My Fair Lady anyone?), or the workout you have missed.

IT'S TIME...

To stop.
To enjoy.

Is The Computer Repair Business Dead?

Computer repairs are being done by computer novices at a higher rate than ever before. More and more people do their own computer repairs. Whether it is installing a hard drive or installing an operating system. Is the computer repair business dead?

The computer industry is evolving. It is always changing. In fact, if there is one thing that is sure in the computer repair industry it's that change is going to happen. Companies like Microsoft have gone out of their way to make their products as easy to use as possible. Where does that leave the computer repair business? What can you do to stay in business and be competitive?

Offer outstanding customer service. Look for different ways to package your services. Take the time to research your competition. What could you offer that no one else is offering? One area that matters to your customer is time. Are you in a position to guarantee fast computer repairs? Maybe a same day repair service? Think about how you can take care of your customer while they wait. You could create a comfortable waiting area for them with good reading material, free coffee, computers with internet access or something similar. Don't be afraid to get creative. Think outside the box.

Keep your prices reasonable without under or overcharging. When pricing your services, it is generally a good idea to go with the industry average for your area. If you offer something unusual like same day repairs, you could charge more money. On the other hand, if you charge the same as everyone else but get the computer repair done quickly, this can easily result in an increase in business.

Don't overcharge for computer parts. Most customers are price savvy. If you are charging a premium for the computer parts you install over what other places are charging, you will most likely find your customer base dwindling. Here again, the industry average is your friend. Find out what your competitors are charging for general computer parts and look to stick around that. Getting known as the most expensive place in town won't exactly help business.

Whatever you do, treat your customer with respect and you'll have more business than you can handle. Is the computer repair business dead? I don't think so. It's simply evolving.

Computers Worms: The Greatest Threat You've Never Seen

If you worry about computer security, then worms are probably near the top of your list. Although much has been done to combat the threat posed by spyware and adware, computer worms and viruses pose a constant, and constantly changing threat. The following information contains useful background from the fine contributors to Wikipedia and may help you avoid this potent danger.

In short, a computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of
itself to other systems and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. In general, worms always harm the network and consume bandwidth, whereas viruses always infect or corrupt files on a targeted computer.

Email worms spread via email messages. Typically the worm will arrive as email, where the message body or attachment contains the worm code, but it may also link to code on an external website. Poor design aside, most email systems requires the user to explicitly open an attachment to activate the worm, but "social engineering" can often successfully be used to encourage this; as the author of the "Anna Kournikova" worm set out to prove. Once activated the worm will send itself out using either local email systems or directly using SMTP. The addresses it sends to are often harvested from the infected computers email system or files, which can be embarrasing and compromise personal identity. Therefore recipients of email worms should assume that they are not sent by the person listed in the 'From' field of e-mail message (sender's address).

Instant messaging worms spread via instant messaging applications by sending links to infected websites to everyone on the local contact list. The only difference between these and email worms is the way chosen to send the links.

With IRC worms, chat channels are the main target and the same infection/spreading method is used as above: sending infected files or links to infected websites. Infected file sending is less effective as the recipient needs to confirm receipt, save the file and open it before infection will take place.

File-sharing networks worms copy themselves into a shared folder, most likely located on the local machine. The worm will place a copy of itself in a shared folder under a harmless name. Now the worm is ready for download via the P2P network and spreading of the infected file will continue.

Internet worms are those which target low level TCP/IP ports directly, rather than going via higher level protocols such as email or IRC. A classic example is "Blaster" which exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft's RPC. An infected machine aggressivly scans random computers on both its local networ and the public internet attempting an exploit against port 135 which, if successful, spreads the worm to that machine.

Users need to be wary of opening unexpected email, and certainly should not run attached files or programs, or visit web sites which such email link to. However, as the ILOVEYOU showed long ago, and phishing attacks continue to prove, tricking a percentage of users will always be possible.

Anti-virus and anti-spyware software are helpful, but must be kept up-to-date with new pattern files every few days at least.

Computer Printer Ink Facts

Computer printer ink is a type of ink that comes from printers that will release small droplets of ink onto paper. Virtually all modern printers now use color ink. The cheaper color printers will use a combination of three colors, and these are magenta, cyan, and yellow, and they will also print black as well. The three primary colors are used to create the wide variety of colors that can be found in nature. Some printers will use ink that is based on CMYK to make sure the color black is pure. The prices of computer printers may vary widely, and the same can be said for the ink. While a basic color printer can be purchased for less than $100, high quality color printers can cost thousands of dollars.

The cost of computer printer ink cartridges for cheap printers can be expensive over the long term. For instance, if the black cartridge is not separate from the other colors, you may need to buy an entire unit once your black has been used up. In the printer ink industry, this phenomenon is called consumables. Another thing that you will want to look at is the quality of the resolution. When you look at the resolution quality of ink, it is important to place an emphasis on the text instead of the graphics. The graphics will almost always appear higher in quality than the text. When you are looking at a printer model, you can compare it to other models by having them print out sample images.

Purchasing a high quality paper that is coated will enhance the look of your computer ink. These coated pieces of paper will not absorb the printer ink in the same manner that the ink is absorbed by standard printer paper. While coated paper is more expensive, the cost should be considered when you are about to purchase ink for your printer. If you need to print high quality images to be used for advertisements, you will need to obtain what is called a wide-format printer. These printers are used to produce text and graphics for large posters, billboards, or banners. In addition to printing images on paper, these printers can be used to print images on materials such as vinyl. They have a professional level of quality, and they are often used by large companies.

The way in which ink is printed on materials will fall under two categories, and these are "drop on demand" and "continuous ink." As the name suggests, printers which use the continuous ink method will spray a bunch of droplets onto the material. While this method is still common, drop on demand will force the ink out of the chamber by using electricity or heat. A thermal technique will be used to warm up a resistor than will push the droplets out of the nozzle. An air bubble will be generated within the chamber. Some companies have also begin using crystals to expand the ink. This is one of the most cutting edge advance in printer ink technology.

An Overview of Computer Networks

My second degree, or should I say my second go through inside the education system was in networking. I'm a certified Novell and Microsoft engineer, not that I'm all that excited about the fact. Networking is actually pretty mindless work once you learn it. It's pretty much do it by the numbers based on what the customer wants. After you hook everything up the software installation is pretty straight forward. My 16 year old daughter could do it or as GEICO would say, a caveman could do it.

In this article I'm just going to cover the basics of what a network is and the types of networks. I'll go into more detail in later articles.

A network is simply a means for computers to speak to each other, or communicate with each other. With a network, computers can receive emails from each other, send files to each other, instant message each other and a variety of other things. This is something that we take for granted today but there was a time when networks were not so sophisticated and not all that efficient either.

There are basically two types of networks.

The simplest network is a LAN or Local Area Network. This is where all the computers in the network are located in one place such as an office building. Within this type of network you have 2 ways to connect.

The simplest way is peer to peer. This is where 2 or more computers are hooked up directly to each other. In other words if you have 5 computers you would have computer 1 hooked into computer 2 which would be hooked into computer 3 and so on. In this type of connection each computer is dependent on the other. So if computer 3 would go down then computers 1 and 2 would not be able to communicate or exchange information with computers 4 and 5 and visa versa. That is the main problem with a peer to peer network. Also in peer to peer networks the write process between computers leads to data corruption problems. This is not something they teach you in school but something you learn from experience.

The more common type of LAN connection is client server. This is where all the computers in the network are connected to each other via a central computer. This kind of connection does require more work in set up but is more efficient, carries data better and if one computer goes down the others aren't affected. However, should the server go down then all the computers on the network would be affected as far as their ability to get information from the other computers and the server itself. They, however, would still be able to do work locally on their own such as with a word processing program, unless the word processing program was located on the server. Then it would not be available. Usually, however, most applications are installed on each computer. What is most commonly lost when a server goes down is the ability to retrieve data that is common to everyone in the network, say an in house database of all employees.

The second type of network is a WAN or wide area network. This is where several LAN networks or even single computers are connected to a much larger network. A perfect example of a WAN is the Internet. This is where users from all over the world can interact with each other through email, chat rooms and instant messaging. WANs are enormous to say the least and are very intricate in their design, requiring hubs from all over the world to stay connected. One hub goes down and it can affect connections for millions of people though there are protocols instituted to reroute connections if a hub does go down.

The above is a very simplified overview of computer networks. In future articles I'll go into detail on the hardware and software required to set up these networks and some of the finer points. Stay tuned.

T Stands for Templates and Time

Lets start with Templates.

What is a template?

In its simplest form, a template is a document you have created (or one already created for you) in which you store information and/ or data that will be unchangeable and you use over and over. Its like creating a * shell * document and some of you might refer to or know this type of document as a boilerplate.

For instance, you can create your company invoice as a template, with logo and design, and call up the template each time you need to send out an invoice. You can create a template for your letterhead, including your headers and footers. You can create templates for your different size envelopes with return address stored in place, create a template for your in-house memos, and timesheets. Whatever you can think of! Whatever type of document you are finding yourself continually having to recreate, make a template and be done with it!

All thats left for you to do is to open the template, and insert the new information thats needed. Example: If youre doing an invoice, you would type in the appropriate information and then use your SAVE AS function (I wrote about this function in the June issue at overhall.com/jun00.htm ).

Microsoft has built in templates, with step-by-step instructions of how you can customize them for your company or home use.

There are two different ways to see what templates are available to you.

Here is how to access them:

Click on START
Move Pointer to New Office Documents (This function is also on your Office Shortcut Bar) and Click.

A box will appear that presents you with many Tabs to choose from and within those Tabs many templates to choose from.

Go ahead, click on some and play around with them. When you have created YOUR template use the SAVE AS function.

You can also access some templates when you are in Microsoft Word.
At the top of the screen, left hand side (make sure you have opened a document or have started a new document) Click FILE and Click on NEW.

You will see some Tabs for a variety of templates that you can use.

Using templates can save you the agony of recreating a cumbersome document over and over again and it can also save you time!

Speaking of time TIME is something that many people complain they dont have enough of, especially to dedicate to their computer.

I can not stress enough to you to schedule time with yourself to at least D-BUST your computer monthly! Make it a new habit and start working on it now. Pick the same time daily, weekly, or monthly to D-BUST. Schedule it, put it in your planner, and on your to-do list. You wont have to do everything that Ive been writing about, especially if you take care of things, such as deleting or saving, as you go along.

Make your computer work for you, thats what its suppose to do. It was meant to give you more time NOT take up more of your time.

If you are stumbling around a program, take and make the time to learn the program. If you have to refer to the manual or call a friend for help every time you try to use a computer tool, piece of software, or hardware, its time to take the time to get professional help! Hire a high school kid, take a class, hire a tutor, just get the help that you need. Use the Help feature on your computer to learn what you can about the software or program. If thats not enough, read a book and do the exercises. You are losing valuable time if you dont! Remember that time is money!

By taking the time to D-BUST and learn how to use your computer to its fullest, your computer and you will be humming along in no time!

Find The Best Deals And Discounts In Computer Sales

You will find while searching for computer sales, that there is no shortage of choices. The computer industry of today provides consumers with many different ways to obtain the personal computer you need. One perfect example is the cost effective method of recycling older computers. The best thing for you to do is do your homework, learn what option is best suited for your needs, and budget.

What is great about these recycled computers is that you can often times get the same great advantages of newer computers, at a much lower price. The key to getting the most from a computer sale is knowing the key features in the different types of computers. Computer sales often provide you with previous demonstration, refurbished, outdate, and over stocked models.

Over Stock

At a computer store, when new models arrive, the company must make room, thereby selling the older models. When we say older models, it could very well be that it was a model from the previous year, but in some cases even older. Buying an older computer does not mean you are missing out. Many of the "older" models contain many of the new capabilities that people want and desire in their computer. Generally, the holiday season is the best time to find these types of deals.

Outdated

Computers that are outdated are generally sold for a much cheaper price. Outdate computers are those that simply cannot compete with the technology of today. While some are sold at a steep discount, perfect for first time computer buyers, many are donated to schools or not for profit groups. Many parents, will purchase outdated computers for younger children that are learning and do not need the major capabilities of new models today.

A Refurbish and Renewed Computer Sale

While many refurbished computers are used or older models that have been made just as or close to their factory condition. In most cases, they have been refurbished by the manufacturer or have had some parts replaced to correct problems. You should be wary when buying these types of computers, while they are typically much cheaper, you may have to worry about a break down.

Previous Demonstrations Computer Sales

Many companies make use of computer only for demonstrative purposes for example as a store display or a convention. They are lightly used for the most part, simply showing the capabilities and features of the computer, but they sell at a discount. The computer may only be about three months old, but you still have the opportunity to grab a great discount. The best part about demo computer sales is that you benefit from what is left of the original warranty.

While a computer sale may seem great or the features of a computer may make you want to grab the item right off the shelf, you do not want to take the first deal you are offered. It is likely you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Additionally, in as little as six months or less, you might find that the price of the computer has dropped dramatically, sometimes by a thousand or more dollars.

Summary:

The key to getting the most from a computer sale knows the key features in the different types of computers. Computer sales often provide you with previous demonstration, refurbished, outdate, and over stocked models.

To make your computer business more profitable, you need to start providing service to businesses, not consumers. This article will show you why providing service to businesses is more profitable than providing service to consumers in your computer business.
Retail-oriented customers need service once or twice a year and don't need your service on an extended basis, but businesses are a different story. Let's say that your goal is to produce $200,000 a year in pure services revenue for your computer business. Here are two choices you have:
In depth: retail-oriented clients
Choice A is providing business to consumer service (B2C). This person may spend $250 a year in services (or product margin) from your shop. That money may be spent on a hard drive upgrade, a repair, installing Wi-Fi equipment, running a Cat 5 cable in their home office, etc. You'll need a lot of customers at $250 per customer to reach $200,000 a year-800 to be exact.
If you're just selling the products and you don't have a lot of after-sale post-support, that customer volume may seem manageable with just a small staff in your computer business. Keep in mind, though, that these retail customers are going to need a lot of handholding. Plus, what is it going to cost you in terms of advertising, promotional, and marketing dollars to be able to get those 800 customers in your computer business?
Next, look at labor costs. How many technicians and system engineers will your firm need to be able to deliver adequate "free" or "paid" support to those customers? (Also, bear in mind that retail computer store service is generally billed at much lower rates than commercial small business service).
In depth: business clients:
Now, look at choice B; business customers (B2B), who are committing to spending a minimum of about $1,000 a month-every single month. That's a $12,000 a year minimum per customer.
Do the math. You'll see you only need about 16 or 17 of these customers to reach your goal. This is a whole lot more manageable in your computer business, even with one or two system engineers, or with just one or two high-level technical consultants.
At $12,000 per year, these businesses are no longer transaction-oriented, one-shot-deal customers. At $1,000 per month commitment ... that's a real client! Plus, you'll also have a lot less non-billable time. You end up "eating" more hours and more time on the tiny jobs, the $100 and the $200 and the $500 customers, than you will with the ones that have extended maintenance over an extended period of time.
