Green screen : Is computer recycling a waste of time?
Recycling IT hardware, especially PCs, sounds like a good idea. But while the environment stands to benefit, recycling has its difficulties. Pia Heikkila reports... Moore's law states processing power doubles every 18 months. This has generally been a good thing. In short, it means better and faster computers. But looked at another way, it means computers age quickly. As it is, updating a company's IT hardware every two years or so is not only expensive but a major headache for IT directors and their cohorts, but once the installation carnival is safely over, there is also the question of what to do with the old devices. There are different ways to ensure computers enjoy a graceful retirement. One option is to donate old PCs to the voluntary sector or schools through a recycler. Then there are those optimists that try to sell them for profit. Some IT equipment is immediately suitable for re-distribution, but older machines in particular have to be broken down into their component parts. According to Claire Snow, director of Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling (ICER), recycling in the UK is a straightforward procedure. "Both us and the Department of Trade and Industry publish a list of PC recyclers that companies can contact directly. The nearest recycling operation will then come and collect the equipment free of charge." However, IT directors hoping to cash in on their PC reserves may be in for a shock as only newer machines can be sold on. One option is to sell devices to a computer reseller or exchange them for new ones, paying the difference. IDC has predicted sales of used PCs will increase over the next two years by 40 per cent and provide welcome revenue for companies whose technology investment is often substantial. Mike Hewitt, project co-ordinator at PC Recycler, a voluntary organisation accepting machines for re-distribution, said: " We have a minimum requirement for PCs. They need to be able to run Windows 95. The PCs are then tested and distributed free of charge to organisations working in the voluntary sector." The EU is planning to introduce a directive that leaves the responsibility of recycling PCs with their manufacturer. If it becomes law, the Waste from Electronic and Electrical Equipment Directive will force PC distributors to take back old equipment being replaced with newer machines. The proposed directive is expected to pass through the Commission this year but local implementation can take much longer. ICER's Snow has proposed different tactics in order to reduce the plastic and metal scrap heaps. "ICER is launching a recycling standard shortly which will help companies to determine which form of disposal is best for them," she said. PC Superstore in Finland claims it has been operating a 'trade old for new' policy for a number for years. Jari Haikio, sales director at PC Superstore, said: "Our salesmen can estimate the value of a company's PCs and then negotiate lower prices for new machines. Old components get the normal recycling treatment, but some can be donated to schools for instance." UK computer retail giant PC World operates a similar policy, but according to a spokeswoman, the majority of PCs still end up on the scrap heap. Some equipment is also sent to countries outside the UK. Developing nations are often eager to take on used PCs for educational and even professional use. Sevy Dadourian, chief technical officer at UK-based computer reseller Re-Usit, said: "We can take old PCs, as long as they work. But we can only give customers a short guarantee. You never know what sort of a history a machine has." And history can return to haunt donors. Recycling old PCs can pose serious security risks if companies and institutions fail to erase data from hard disks. Data recovery experts say banks, hospital and other institutions can risk exposing sensitive data when PCs are re-sold or discarded. Experts claim that even formatting a hard drive isn't enough to destroy all data. More robust methods are needed. Kim Vaisanen, MD at Blancco, a data cleaning specialist, told silicon.com: "Many companies don't realise it is their responsibility to clean the hard drive. If sensitive data ends up in the wrong hands, companies only have themselves to blame." Tony Inkster, a recovery specialist at data recovery company Ibas, said many financial institutions don't realise the sensitivity of their data. He said: "The argument over how likely someone is to stumble across highly sensitive information and abuse it is irrelevant as data shouldn't be there in the first place. To recover data is very simple. Anyone can get their hands on critical information. You hardly need any IT knowledge to be able to recover information." A clean, green conscience seems to be the only major benefit of recycling old PCs. Certainly financial payback can be surprisingly small. But despite the pitfalls, surely the high-tech industry as a whole would benefit from a more environmentally friendly image. After all, technology is designed to advance our lives, not to increase an ever-growing waste pile. Today's electronics components ArticleUniversity Online Degrees - Join the High Ranks On Your Computer
Now there's few words that I like more than consortium and portal; and that is just one of the exciting reasons why I'm getting all sorts of worked up for my university online degree. Are you thinking that I could engage in other activities that had some semblance of a connection with the words consortium and portal? I agree. But, I also want to get started on my career and don't have the time to go to classes full time, because of my job.
The problem was that I have always been a little apprehensive of the programs that offered university online degrees. This is where my two favorite words come in. I can actually get my degree, online, by taking classes from major universities. Not simple institutions.
For example, If I used the Canadian Virtual University, or CVU, I have the option of taking classes from 13 established universities across Canada. There are several of these types of organizations, such as the Global University Alliance. This is a consortium of nine different major universities from the U.S., Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands. As you have probably gathered by now the Global University Alliance or CVU themselves have no classes to offer, but simply act as a portal for the major universities. This way your getting the benefits of a university online degree (classes at your own pace and convenience, yet still offering personalized attention), but also having the satisfaction that you're not sacrificing a quality education.

Computer Desks: Features To Look For
An office worker spends as much time at his desk as he does in his bed. Still it?s doubtful whether he or the corporate buyer thought as much about acquiring the desk as they did their beds. Maybe the only considerations were that the desk had to house a computer, fit into a certain space, and cost less than X amount. Shopping that way is only a start, because the computer desk has evolved into one of the most sophisticated pieces of furniture in the office. There are many variables to consider.
Quality is number one, because a computer desk has to be durable. Those build-it-yourself jobs that come in a box are tempting, but what is easy to put together falls apart faster. Also there are a huge variety of lumber grades, and even different grades of chipboard. Wood, or the metal equivalent, is the most costly part of the desk, and the cheaper ones simply use cheaper materials. Hard woods are called hard for a purpose, and good lumber is an investment that pays off in both durability and beauty. This unit must support a valuable computer and the necessary peripherals, plus offer a friendly ergonomic environment to the worker. So quality is not the place to scrimp.
In a fluctuating office, size and portability may be very important. There are stackable computer desks designed to fit into a closet, plus incredible space-saving models that make good use of every vertical and horizontal inch. Corner desks have become an incredible subset of the computer desk family, offering a wide variety of designs and possibilities. If the job dictates the computer, then the computer has every right to dictate the type of support it needs. The customer should make a list of features he requires in a desk, such as CD racks, filing cabinets, locked drawers, printer ledge, extra outlets, and shelves for external devices.
Architecture and interior design are also important concerns, and there is no reason why a modern computer desk shouldn?t fit perfectly in the over-all design of the workspace, be it Early American or Art Deco. Some of the most impressive computer desks don?t even look like computer desks, and they cohabitate perfectly with antiques and Persian rugs. Hiding that big PC tower or hefty monitor has never been easier, and many desks take into account flat screens and laptops, too. The executive computer desk is a growing market, and the discerning customer can find a desk that meets both aesthetic and practical needs.
Shopping online is often a good way to start, because online outlets can offer more variety than the corner office supply store. Just don?t stop looking, because the perfect computer desk is out there.

What Is Computer Virus ?
A computer virus is a malicious computer program that, when executed by an unsuspecting human, performs tasks that primarily include replicating itself and in some cases deploying a payload.
A decade or so ago, viruses were pretty simple. They got into a system and infected a file or two. It was a basic as ordering coffee when coffee was easy to order. "One coffee pleaseblack."
Today, the catalog of viruses you have to defend yourself against is frighteningly complex. In fact, it's become as complex as, well, ordering coffee.
"Looks like you've been infected by a dropper that's put a Trojan on your system, which deployed a multi-partite that opened a backdoor and also infected the master boot record."
Sounds like an order at Starbucks, don't you think?
These days a discussion about a virus can actually occur without using the word virus because sometimes viruses are worms or Trojan horses, which are virus-like nasties that act a little different than their infectious cousins.
Why are they called computer viruses? Well, because they have similar characteristics to biological viruses that infect humansin at least one way. The computer variety jumps from computer to computer much like a cold virus jumps from your kids to you and from you to your spouse.
Don't let all this frighten you, though. It's not that hard to figure out and defending your computer against viruses is pretty straightforward. Still, if the idea makes you queasy, skip ahead to the part of the chapter about how to easily protect yourself from viruses. But I hope you stick around because the more you know, the geekier you will be. Okay, not really. But understanding them makes them much less scary.
Viruses were one of the first real security threats people had to deal with when personal computers started appearing in homes a couple of decades ago. The first computer viruses were written in the 1980s; however, they really didn't become a big threat until the late 1990s when everyone who owned a personal computer started connecting to the Internet.
Before then viruses spread via floppy disks or CDs. They would ride on the back of files stored on a disk or in the boot area of the floppy and replicate when the disk was inserted into the computer. The Internet's popularity has also become the chief reason that security on personal computers has become such a hot topic. A Net connection is the off-ramp from the Internet into your computer for all data. And guess what? For viruses it's an express lane.

Have You Invited A Spy Into Your Computer?
Ever wondered what to give the "Person Who Has Everything"? A Gift Basket could be just the thing. Have you been from shop to shop and thought "Yes This is It" and then discounted the gift because it wasn't really what you wanted.
My best friend has everything and when I say everything, "I Mean Everything". She has either been given or purchased every conceivable gadget available in the last 5 years. She loves to shop. One of her motto's is "Shop Til you Drop, Spend Til the End". And she lives by that rule!
When it comes to gifts for my friend -- she is "The Hardest Person to Buy For". Oh did I tell you, she even has a kitchen sink on her car key tag !
It was while looking for a present for my friend that I thought "What About A Gift Basket". I was in a specialized shop and the sign said "For the Person Who Has Everything" and the light turned on.
I'm not sure if you are aware but these days gift baskets have changed. No longer are they the old style cane baskets (although there are some very attractive cane baskets available on today's market). Today Gift Baskets came in all shapes and sizes. In fact, it is basically up to your imagination as to what a "Gift Basket" should be. You can use old shoes, buckets, calico bags, pot plant holders in fact anything that holds what items you purchase to fill the basket with.
Gift Baskets are lots of fun to create and very easy to make. Gone are the days of saying... oh I'm not creative enough to make a professional looking basket. Anyone can make a professional looking basket -- as long as you have some imagination and a willingness to give it a try.
If you are stuck for a present for that "Person Who Has Everything" then a Gift Basket is for you!
Firstly decide on a theme or if you aren't sure then write down the interests of the recipient ie. golf or tennis, shopping etc. You could even base it around a coming event. Once you have made the list, work your way through it until you find something that stands out that would fit into your Gift Basket "theme".
For today's basket lets say your friend loves to entertain and one of her favorite meals is "Italian" food.
You could choose a selection of baskets for this theme; today we will use a large pasta bowl as our "basket" or a large cooking pot. Our basket needs to be large enough to hold the goodies that we are going to purchase so that we can then turn this into a Professional Looking "Gift Basket". If neither of these ideas appeals to you, let your imagination take over and choose something that fits into your theme selection.
Next take yourself down to the local supermarket or deli who specialize in gourmet foods. Set yourself a budget as to what you want to spend and then go about buying non-perishable items to fill the basket. Speak to the shop attendant to ensure that the items you are purchasing fit into your theme. Buy different colors and types of pasta to give variety of color and shape to your basket.
Next take yourself to a department store or kitchenware shop and purchase some really great utensils to go with the other items that you have purchased. You could also add an "Easy Step by Step Guide" if they need cooking help, or send them to a "Cooking Lesson" for something extra.
Once you have gathered these items, it is time to begin to assemble your gift basket.
Depending upon the type of basket you have chosen you may need to fill the bottom of the basket with some shredded paper, as this will give the basket height. Place the items in the basket to give a layered effect. Layering items at different heights in the basket makes the overall design more pleasing to the eye.
Use small pieces of tape to hold items in place. Next wrap clear cellophane around the outside of the basket and tie the top with wired ribbon or curling ribbon to match the color scheme of your gift.
To finish off our basket make a gift tag and tuck a small item into the ribbon around the basket to give a professional look.
Congratulations, you've done it... "A Present For the Person Who Has Everything" -- A Gift Basket! Copyright Donna Hamer About Donna: Donna Hamer is the author and publisher of 101 Gift Basket Ideas. For a Free 5 part Mini Course on how to create your own "Personalized Gift Baskets", visit 101giftbasketideas.com We've all felt stress in our lives. And we're left wondering what's the best way to try and deal with it.
Some exercise, others veg out in front of the TV, I however have discovered the amazing zen of charm bracelets.
Charm bracelets are both a way to collect memories without large obtrusive knick knacks everywhere and is also a fun hobby for people that like collecting things.
It's almost like a treasure hunt looking for new charms to add to your collection and display like a trophy to everyone you come in contact with for them to admire your work and your chance to tell them all about the history of each charm.
See, it's not just about collecting the charms simply to collect them, it's about what they mean to you.
Much like someone that gets many tattoos, there's a story that goes behind them and a memory of when they got it.
It's the same with charms, there is a certain story, a certain reason for having the charms you have and everytime you look at them, they remind you about the things that are special to you.
You can collect charms that remind you of a trip you went on, of a certain belief you have, or a special time in your life. And best of all, these can all be worn on your wrist.
You can even make multiple bracelets for different periods in your life or for different moods.
It's a relzxing, almost theraputic hobby that will help you relieve stress and live your life with great joy and happiness. And all those memories are a short glance away.
I would reccomend this hobby to anyone, and once you've got you're very first charm, you'll know what I mean.
The charms are endless just like your memories. Carry them with you always. Copyright Juliette Adams About Juliette: Juliette is the nation's leading expert on the creation of charm bracelets and rare charms. Her site is coolcharmbracelets.com One of the biggest and hottest growing trends in the art of tattoo design is Hawaiian arm or leg band tattoos. As this trend goes a lot of people think to themselves, well of course." At least that is what I said to myself at first. You can hardly drive more then 10 minutes on the freeway in southern California where I am from and not see a big SUV like a Lincoln Navigator or a Cadillac Escalade and not see a Hawaiian sticker. Things with flowers designs, or turtles, dolphins. Ya see it started off with the sticker and then the car seat covers with hibiscus flowers everywhere and it just grew from there.
This trend of Hawaiian design has then met it's match with the whole tribal tattoo movement. Tribal tattoos have been the hottest thing in the tattoo world since sliced bread or the old school WWII era Hula dancer. You see these influences have been all around us for a long time my grandpa even has one of those Hula Girls tattoos still. Granted it is a little saggy and faded now but he still has one on his forearm nonetheless.
So the whole tribal tattoo and the growth in interest for Hawaiian designs have combined to make a hot and growing market for Hawaiian tattoos. This is really an up and coming thing and it not huge yet. However many tattoo artists are spotting the trend and jumping on it already.
Of course there is a lot of controversy on this subject also like anything. If you look on the internet there is a controversy about getting Kanji and Japanese Tattoos also. Anytime you try and take the designs of a culture and do not depict them accurately it creates a sense of bastardization or what I call the "Disney Effect" towards the culture. I mean how would you feel if you were in China and someone said, oh you should try this hot new restaurant out it serves this great food that is really American. They have fried chicken and apple pie that is the best." Well, at first you would be excited right? Sure it would be nice for a good home cooked meal if you have been out of the US for a long time. However once you get there you see the place has really tacky and awful reproductions of 50's art and the all the food tastes kind of strange. It would probably bee kind of close or resemble what you were thinking of but it would be missing something or a few key ingredients. I bet this would leave you feeling a little sad and like your culture was not totally understood.
Well, I can not speak for you and maybe you will feel different but I was pretty sad when after staying in Japan for 3 months I was invited to a 1950's classic hamburger joint. When we got there it was Elvis with a funny accent playing on the jukebox and when my hamburger came it had a fried egg on top of it with teriyaki sauce. WOW what a surprise that was for me. I kind of felt weird about being in the place that had tried to recreate something from my own culture.
So, the same controversy rolls on in the world of tattoos. Anytime you get a tattoo design from another culture just make sure you go with a professional. Do not have your friend trace out some Kanji in a book for a tattoo and don't go and rip some design of the internet because it states that it is Hawaiian. Go to a real custom tattoo designer and have them do the research and come up with some designs. After all this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life and since Hawaiian arm band tattoos and leg tattoos are typically big it will be a significant investment in pain, time and money to get the thing done. So you should consult with a professional and get top notch work done.
Copyright 2005 Chris Ryerson About Chris: Chris is the owner and webmaster of designmyattoos.com where you can find custom tattoo artists waiting to design a tattoo for you. Either a Hawaiian Arm Tattoo or some other tattoo design. This success mistake has cost me so much money that I'm almost embarrassed to tell you.
"So Mike, why are you telling me?"
Because I know that if you can steer away from this success mistake, it can help you improve your income and change your life. That's my goal.
Here's how this came about:
Yesterday, I was reading a book about investing from the very successful money manager Peter Lynch.
Even though he was talking about 'investing', he zeroed in on a success principle that so many people miss.
I did.for 7+ years and it cost me a fortune.
And it caused me a bunch of stress.
What's so interesting is that Warren Buffett used this same success insight to become the 2nd richest person in the world.
Here's the deal:
I used to be so 'short-sighted' and wanted immediate gratification.
If my new 'business idea' didn't work out in 30-60 days, I quit.
Then I'd try something else and, after a week, I went onto something else.
This downward spiral happened for a while because I was 'ruled' by a short-term vision and the desire for immediate gratification.
This is how 98% of the world operates.
THIS is why only 2% of the world live their dreams.
Here's what Peter Lynch was saying and what Warren Buffet knows.
Also, Michael Dell knows this, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Oprah and others all know this.
***One of the biggest 'secrets' to success is taking the LONG-TERM VIEW.
(Let me say that again)
***One of the biggest 'secrets' to success is taking the LONG-TERM VIEW.
When Warren Buffett makes an investment, he's looking 5-15 years out, sometimes more.
All great entrepreneurs understand that in order to WIN BIG they must take the long-term view.
3-years, 5-years, 15-years, 20-years+.
You need to give yourself time for your idea or business to grow.
Most people never do this - it's unfortunate. AND it's also never too late to start.
You need to EXPAND your horizon.
Change your perspective.
You need to take the NEXT STEP today and keep in mind your long-term view. Not necessarily a specific long term goal, but a longer term VIEW.
There's a season for everything.
Take the time to plant the seeds, water them, and be patient for your harvest.
Stay disciplined.
I know you can do it. Copyright 2005 Mike Litman Resource box: If you're scattered, if you procrastinate too much, and if you want to 'rev up' your income, see Mike Litman's site at: powerofconcentration.net Only about 20% of your copy is going to get read. The rest will simply be scanned. I'm sure you've heard the statistic before. It's nothing new. While it might sound frightening or frustrating, it's a fact of copywriting life. So what do you do next? Give up? What difference does it make if only about 20% will be read anyway?
It makes a world of difference. Especially if you understand that there are some sections of your copy that are practically guaranteed to get read. If you know what these are and work to reinforce them, you'll see your conversions increase dramatically whether your copy is geared toward online or offline promotions.
HEADLINES
Headlines have always been and will always be the most important section in any copy. They are the first thing to get read and have the greatest impact on whether any of the other copy gets read. Those stories you've seen floating around the Internet about marketers who have made minute changes to a headline and tripled their conversion rates are true. It happens all the time. In fact, it's happened to me.
Headlines and sub-headlines can guide your visitors to read deeper into your copy. If you set up a structure of progressive headlines (marketingwords.com/articles/articles_progressheadlines.html), you'll have a better shot getting your point across. Pay a lot of attention to your headline. It's the powerhouse of your copy.
CAPTIONS
Captions started with newspaper journalists. When they would run a picture with a story, they would add a few words underneath to explain what or who the picture was of. People got into the habit of looking for the captions in order to relate the importance of the image with the information they were receiving. This still holds true. Captions in advertising pieces are highly read. Don't waste the space!
FIRST SENTENCES
When you scan something -- an article, a book, a newspaper, a magazine, a website -- what do you read? Almost everyone reads the first sentence of each paragraph. These sentences are vitally important in order to get your potential customers interested enough to keep reading. If you create exceptional first sentences, one of two things will happen. One: The prospect will be more likely to continue reading the copy. Two: The first sentences in each paragraph will be enough to convince him/her to buy.
FIRST IN BULLETED LIST
Just as with the first sentence in each paragraph, people also almost always read the first entry in a bulleted list. If it hits home, they might keep reading. But, knowing that you have their attention for at least one second, always make sure your first bullet point is extremely powerful and enticing.
PS's
Writing a direct mail or Web sales letter? The PS is another hot spot. Take advantage of this real estate. Repeat offers, remind readers of bonuses, reinforce guarantees or recap limited-time offers. This section is the final pitch before your reader either acts or trashes your copy so make it count.
Have you noticed something about these five sections? Why do you think they are virtually guaranteed to get read in any piece of copy? They are unusual. They are limited. They stand out. They are eye-catching.
You only have a limited number of headlines and sub-heads in copy. They are almost always offset by bolding or underlining so they easily catch the eye of the reader. Captions only appear when there are images. They do not appear all throughout the copy. First sentences are also rare. Only one sentence in each paragraph can be the first one. This tells the reader to keep going or jump to another section that might be of more interest. First entries in bulleted lists are unusually formatted and catch the eye of the reader. PS's? There's only one, and since it's the last thing on the page, most often, it stands out too.
These rare elements give you five guaranteed shots at building curiosity, promoting benefits, generating interest and closing sales. If you haven't done it before, now is the time to review your copy to be sure you're making the most out of these opportunities.

I began the journey of owning a home based business several months ago. Like many others, I found the task of marketing my business overwhelming and frustrating. Without marketing, you don't make sales, and without sales, you can't profitably run your business.
After spending countless hours on the computer and throwing many dollars down the drain, I learned one very important thing: You must combine mass marketing with a personal touch.
There are many great marketing tools you can use to achieve mass marketing including pay per click engines, placing ads, buying leads, banner advertising, and exchanging links just to name a few. While these methods can produce positive results, they lack the personal connection many new business owners need to build a true customer base.
On the other hand, personal touch methods such as emailing your family and friends about your new business can be a great way to start spreading the word, but this approach may not help you reach enough people to give your business the jump start it really needs.
So where did this lead this flailing entrepreneur? Message boards.
I initially visited message boards to get help with my marketing dilemma. In the process, I realized this was not only a place to exchange valuable information with other home business owners, but this was also a great place to market my own online business.
Not only did I find plenty of message board group members willing to give information, I found many interested parties for my own business. Soon, I realized that not only was I becoming a more educated marketing guru, I was introducing my new business to many new friends (and customers).
By joining message board groups, not only will you find a new outlet to advertise your business, but you will also build credibility among your peers.
Follow these simple steps to begin utilizing message boards to market your home business today: - Visit a search engine and do a search on message boards.

Too often, when we say we are "taking care of business", we think about the paperwork, the accounting, the inventory, etc... the trivial things that are important to get done in order for our business to run smoothly and efficiently. While necessary, they are not the most important.
We need to change our thinking about what "taking care of business" means. We need to make sales in order to have a profitable business, and we know without our customers or consultants, we don't have a business. They are our lifeblood, they are what keeps us moving forward, and meeting their needs should be our primary mission.
Without consultants or customers, there are no sales. Without sales, there is no revenue... without revenue, there is no business and we might as well go back and get a j.o.b. It is crucial that we take care of our customers and consultants. CRM (customer-relationship management) is a buzz-word in "big business". Many large corporations have implemented systems and technology to supposedly create customer care. Some have been successful, many have not.
Most of these systems simply give the illusion of customer care, but have failed miserably in actually providing it. How many times have you been through the "round robin" of "press 1 for this" and "press 2 for that", only to spend an hour or more and never actually speak to a live person or get your problem solved? You hang up in the phone in frustration and vow never to spend money with XYZ Company again. This approach to customer care continues to baffle me as to why large companies believe this is effective. How can they possibly think that customer relationships can be created and nurtured by a recording?
Are those who make these decisions that far removed up the "corporate ladder" they can't see this isn't customer care at all and having the opposite effect?
Each and every one of our customers and consultants should be made to feel like they are our most important one. If we don't take care of them, someone or some other company will. Small and home businesses have an incredible opportunity to take back customer care and relationships the way it is supposed to be. We are in an incredible position to "take care of business".
Technology is wonderful. Without technology, there would be no internet and many of us would not be in business. However, there is no technology on this earth that can replace human connections. Technology will never replace our customers knowing that there is someone who truly cares about their needs.
So, how about you? Are you taking care of business?

At the end of your e-zine ads, include a call to action that tells your reader what you want them to do next (i.e., visit your site or subscribe to your e-zine).
8. Don't be cute or funny with your ad.
You might put your reader in a good mood, but don't count on that translating into more visits to your site or more sales.

Online computer game providers often promise free computer games. But not many game providers offer free computer games. Game manufacturers often use the term free computer games to attract the attention of the buyers. Here we discuss some methods to download free computer games. The simplest way to get free computer games is to download the free game demos. Almost all computer game sites offer demos of their computer games. The demos are quite similar to the original computer games. The computer games now cost you more than $40 per title. So, from the buyers' perspective, it's always beneficial to download the demos first to get a feel for the games. Keeping the buyers' viewpoint in mind, the computer game manufacturers offer free game downloads. Thanks to free computer games, buyers can check out the games. The demand for free computer games are always on the rise. That's why leading web portals such as MSN and Yahoo have started offering an extensive range of free computer games. Free computer games offer the opportunity to try the games before you ultimately decide to buy. The free computer games are mostly time-bound. The games expire on a certain date. Laptop Computers Instigate Classroom Revolution!
Have you noticed that laptop computers are beginning to dictate what happens in the classroom? Additionally, mobile technology is changing where learning takes place. This is especially true as laptops are entering the educational arena in ever increasing numbers. Yet not all educators are quick to jump on the notebook bandwagon. They are waiting to see if laptop use is truly changing learning for the better. Thats why schools such as Framingham State College in Boston and the Myron B. Thompson Academy in Honolulu are being scrutinized. Both schools have elected to use laptop computers as a major resource in their curriculum. It must be noted that simply having laptop computer access does not change the learning process - the entire curriculum must change and merge technology with academics. Using a laptop is more than replacing paper and pencil with electronics. The entire relationship between the teacher and students must change. Teachers are no longer merely dispensers of knowledge but become facilitators in a learning process that takes place with additional tools for communication with students. This encourages greater student involvement, long recognized as a key to learning. Professors actively engaged in education via technology see laptops as a way to give real life experiences to otherwise insipid theories. For instance, physics students can witness the breakdown of radioactive materials, math students can apply their knowledge of logic to projects that use spreadsheets, and english majors can evaluate peers poetry and prose. With laptop availability in the classroom, access to additional information and knowledge is readily available. So what do students think of the laptop trend? Well most find it invigorating. Rather than dealing with one dimensional lectures, teachers can engage the internet to show relevancy to daily life. Out of date, static texts can be set aside for breaking news stories - and so much more. As schools show the link between laptops and learning effectiveness, the trend for laptop use will certainly grow. For those opposed to the technological revolution taking place in today's classrooms, perhaps the words of Maria Montessori should be heeded. ".....If education is always to be conceived along the same antiquated lines of a mere transmission of knowledge, there is little to be hoped from it in the bettering of man's future....." History Of The Computer; The Emergence Of Electronics.
The history of the computer inevitably includes the development of electronics, we look at the explosive (!) growth of electronics in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
If anything could be said in favor of war, it may be that it speeds up the development of technology. Of course much of that technology is employed in killing people and destroying infrastructure, but there are also things which could be considered beneficial.
Electronics was around in the early part of the 20th Century, wireless, or radio, was in its infancy at the time of the first world war. Radio broadcasting came into prominence in the '20s and 30's, Television started in the '30's.
The second world war, from 1939 in Europe, and a couple of years later involving the USA, ended in 1945. Radar (Radio Aid To Detection And Ranging) was developed from early experiments, just prior to the war, in Britain and Germany. There was rapid development in the field, and, by the end of the war, Radar was being used in several fields.
Aircraft Navigation - Using ground transmitters in sets of 3, widely spaced, to give an aircraft using a receiver a method of pinpointing its position. This is a similar system to that used in gps today, substituting satellites for the ground stations.
Targeting - A beam was transmitted from a Radar station in England so that it intercepted a target in Germany. An aircraft could fly along the beam, guided by signals, dots or dashes, if it strayed off the beam, left or right. Known as flying on the beam.
Interception - a series of ground stations around the South-East coast of England, feeding into a central control room, where their tracks could be displayed, significantly assisted in the Battle of Britain (1940).
Airborne Interception (AI) - Developed towards the end of the war, used a Tranceiver (transmitter/receiver) in a night fighter to find a target in the dark, or bad weather, and track it to within firing range.
Beacon - A tranceiver was located at the end of a runway so that ground staff could guide a returning aircraft to land in bad weather, this became more and more sophisticated, developing into GCA or Ground Controlled Approach.
Shipping - radar equipped vessels could track other vessels in darkness or fog, whether peacefully or aggressively.
Many other sytems were developed or initiated in that 6 year period. Knowledge of electronics, and what it could be used for vastly increased. In parallel with the development of radar, other fields of electronics were also advancing, under pressure from the requirement to improve the technology.
Long range guns on ships or in the field needed to be aimed accurately. The calculations required in ballistics to aim a gun so that you can hit the target, or aim a V2 rocket so that it hits London from continental Europe, are phenomenal.
This, then was the scene at the end of the war. We knew how to tackle large calculations with speed, and we had developed a new concept in electronics, Pulse Technology. This is so called because radar uses short pulses of high energy, for two main reasons.
1. The pulses can be coded. For example, in the Navigation example we looked at, 3 ground stations transmit a signal whose source needs to be identified. One transmitter could transmit a series of single pulses spaced say 10 milliseconds. A second could transmit a pair of pulses at 10 millisecond spacing, and the third 3 pulses. A chart would tell the navigator where the pulse sets were transmitted from, and the distances obtained from the radar set used to locate the position on the chart.
2. The power, or strength, of the signal. A continuous radio signal, like a radio broadcast, takes a given amount of power. However, a 1 millisecond pulse every 10 milliseconds, uses only one tenth of the power, on average. So a radar transmitter can have a much greater range for the same power. This is is especially important in a primary (transmit and receive) radar system, where we must detect the reflection of the signal we transmit. Likewise a secondary (receive) radar system, for example the navigation system above, will have a bigger range.
Next we will look at how early computers were now possible due to these developments.

Understanding Computer Memory
---------------------------------------------------------- Permission is granted for the article below to forward, reprint, distribute, use for ezine, newsletter, website, offer as free bonus or part of a product for sale as long as no changes are made and the byline, copyright, and the resource box below is included. ---------------------------------------------------------- Understanding Computer Memory By Stephen Bucaro Understanding computer memory is important because your computer's memory is where the action is. Sure your computer's central processing unit (CPU) may be the computer's brain, but what good is a brain without memory? Because memory is such an important part of the computer, it has been redesigned and tweaked over the years to make it store more data and work faster. That has resulted in all kinds of technical terms and contractions. In this article, I attempt to clear up some of these terms and give you a basic understanding of computer memory. When you work with an application on your computer, it is loaded into "main memory". There are other kinds of memory besides main memory. For example, there is "flash BIOS" memory and "cache" memory. In fact, I could argue that a computer consists mainly of memory. Even the CPU consists mainly of a type of memory called "registers". In this article, I focus on main memory. Memory is actually an array of "cells". Each cell holds a binary bit, either 0 or 1. The cells are arranged in rows of 32 cells to store each "word". A word might contain the bits to code a single number or a single character. Each word can be accessed by it's address. A computer does not have to access the addresses in numerical order. It can store or retrieve a word from any address at random, hence the term "random access memory" (RAM). Because a computer needs millions of memory cells, they have to be cheap. The cheapest memory cell is an extremely tiny capacitor. In reality "0" means no electric charge is stored in the cell and "1" means an electric charge is stored in the cell. A tiny capacitor can store an electric charge, but that charge dissipates off within a few milliseconds. To prevent loss of the data, the computer uses circuitry that repeatedly scans all the memory cells and refreshes the charge in any cells that contain a "1". This circuitry operates between accesses of the memory by the CPU and other components. This continuous recharging is referred to as "dynamic" refresh, hence the term "dynamic" RAM (DRAM). I am always surprised at how many people who work with computers don't understand what a "bus" is. It's very simple. You need a wire to connect to a memory cell. Instead of a wire, a circuit board uses a copper "trace" inside or on the surface of the circuit board. To access a word of data, you need 32 parallel traces. You also need a few traces to carry the signals that control whether you are reading or writing the memory. This describes the "data bus". To access a word of data, you need to provide the address of the word. It requires 64 parallel traces for the "address bus". There are many other parallel groups of traces on the circuit board that conduct various communication and control signals, each of them is referred to as a "bus". The most important signal tracing around the circuit board is the system clock. The system clock is the "heart beat" of the system. It is a continuous stream of electric pulses at a very high frequency. If you have a 1.2 GHz computer system, then your system clock pulses come at a rate of 1,200,000,000 per second. Memory can be accessed on the rising edge of the system clock. In other words, memory reading and writing is synchronized to the system clock, hence the term "synchronous" DRAM (SDRAM). SDRAM comes in a 168-pin dual inline memory module (DIMM) package. It comes in two speeds, 100 MHz (PC100) and 133 MHz (PC133). It comes in 3.3 volt and 5.0 volt versions. Some SDRAM contain extra circuitry called "error checking and correction" (ECC) that stores extra bits along with the data. The extra bits are used to verify the integrity of the data and correct any errors. New systems use a type of memory that can access data on the rising edge and the falling edge of the system clock pulses. This means your computer can access the data in memory at double the rate, hence the term "Double Data Rate SDRAM (DDR-SDRAM). DDR-SDRAM comes packaged in a 168-pin DIMM. It comes in two speeds, 266 MHz (PC2100) and 333 MHz (PC2700). If your motherboard has more than one memory module slot, and you have only one memory module, you might be required to install the single DIMM in slot 1. Some Intel motherboards use Rambus DRAM (RDRAM). RDRAM uses a proprietary communications channel to access memory. RAMBUS is packaged in a 184-pin RAMBUS In-line Memory Module (RIMM). There are two connectors on an Intel Rambus motherboard, each must contain either a RIMM or a C-RIMM. A C-RIMM (continuity RIMM) does not contain memory. It is a module that provides a path pass-through for the signals. If you have an older computer, its main memory may use "fast page memory" (FPM) or "extended data output" (EDO) memory. Some of these used a special "parity bit" to validate the integrity of the data. These older types of memory came packaged in a 30 pin single inline memory module (SIMM) or a 72 pin SIMM. If you want to upgrade your computer's memory, make sure you are using the correct type of memory for your motherboard. It's important to study the manual that came with your motherboard to determine exactly what type and speed of memory is required. ---------------------------------------------------------- Resource Box: Copyright(C)2003 Bucaro TecHelp. A Featured scanners ArticleIf You Need A Method For Backing Up Your Computer You Should Consider A CD-ROM
Computers today are used in every part of life. They are used for communication, work, play and even to buy food. Therefore, when you lose a computer or even just a file from your computer, it is like losing your best friend. You can't back up or replace a best friend, but you can backup files, or your entire computer if desired. Several back up methods exist. Some computers will automatically back themselves up; you just need to find the folder where the back up is stored. If your computer does not have this function, or you are not sure if the function exists or is working, manually back up your files. For example, after creating an important Microsoft Word document, save it at least twice in at least two different locations. If however, you lose your entire hard drive, it won't matter how many times you have saved the same document. To avoid this dilemma, save your files on something other than the computer's hard drive. Floppy disks are not commonly used, but they will work for small files. Be ware that floppy disks can be unreliable and often crash just as your computer did. USB Drives are becoming more popular as a back up tool. A USB drive is a small device that holds large amounts of information. It works like a floppy disk in that you can place files, delete files or move files around within the USB. All recent computers have USB ports that should be able to read any USB device. CD ROMs are also a popular way to back up your files. A CD ROM looks just like a music CD you would buy in a store, but can hold up to 700 MB of information. This allows for large files or a large amount of small files to be stored on this disk. Once you put information onto a CD ROM, you can not add files or change the files on the disk. This can be one way of ensuring nobody else tampers with your work, but can also be frustrating when you would like to back up a newer version of your work. In this case, a CD RW disk may suit you better. RW stands for re writable disk. On this kind of disk you can add, delete and rewrite files until the disk is full. When using the rewrite option, be sure you do not accidentally rewrite something you wanted to keep the back up of. Both CD options can be done on most home computers. You will need a CD (possibly two in case the first one ends up as practice!), and a CD burner. Almost all computers sold today, or sold recently, are equipped with a basic CD burner and burning software that is generally simple to use. If your computer is not equipped with these devices, you may purchase a basic CD burner and software for a relatively inexpensive price. Once you have created your back up CD, take care to keep it in a cool dry place where it will be safe from damage.
MMORPG: The new trend in computer gaming
From the firsts bar gaming machines like pacman or pong to the current computers or console games like The Sims 2 or Halo enormous steps forward have been made, up to the point that it is difficult to consider the latters just as a natural evolution of the firsts. But that is the real truth, the wonderful masterpieces the videogames industry is able to produce nowadays are nothing more than the results of a slow work made of tiny improvements that in the years brought up to those results.
If we check the differences between today's and ten years ago videogames, the most obvious ones are in the graphics. Graphic cards with always more powerful GPUs (Graphical Processing Unit) and more memory have made possible the modeling of three dimensional fantastic alive worlds.
But graphics are not certainly everything. Also the whole concepts and actions that constitute the game itself, the gameplay, have been notably deepened and improved. And so the two white bars at the edges of the screen hitting the ball as fast and diagonally as possible disappears, while adventures with deep plots, arcades in which being able to coordinate movements and hiding at the right moment is as important as firing with an excellent aim, together with games where more than one players fight or cooperate for a common objective are born.
Oh yes, multiplayer games. Since 1999, year of release of a cult in the multiplayer genre like Unreal Tournament, the phenomena became a mass one, so that it gave life to a new word, netgamer.
And obviously the videogame industry hasn't ignored the phenomena and started to work.
But already two years before Unreal Tournament, the US based corporation "Origin" released what at the moment was the diamond edge in the multiplayer field, Ultima Online.
Set in an ancient Britannia, lands of dragons, wizards and knights, the Ultima Online servers were (and still are) capable of hosting in the same world more that one thousand players. And here is how the multiplayer gaming genre goes from a last hit battle between two six-people teams to much more, a "real breathing virtual world" with its society, its ecosystem, its economy, and all of this on its player's hands.
Thousands of players creating guild and alliances or declaring war each other for resources control or simply to defend their own or plunder others richness was something absolutely new. And fun.
To define the new game genre that Ultima Online made famous, the MMORPG term was created, acronym of Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, where massive refers to the amount of players concurrently playing together.
Ultima Online was followed by many more games of success, like EVE Online, World of Warcraft, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies, Guild Wars, Planetside and so on. Eve Online is even capable of servicing on its server about 30.000 players at the same time, while World of Warcraft distributed between a few hundred servers more than 7 millions players all around the world.
Today specialized websites like OGRank.com covers the topic, addressing the new players to the MMORPG that fits best for them and servicing resources and news to the more expert ones.

Computer-Human Interfaces Will Soon Be Here
Can we combine the best of the human brain with the best of the modern day computer? Not just any modern day computer but a super computer, with artificial intelligent programming? Some believe this cannot be done, yet in reality we are nearly there and it will be so within five years or so. You see, it wouldn't take much, the mind and body work on very low wattage. Brain interfaces will be LED level power, thus you only need vibrational stimulation, perhaps even at the ELF levels. In the future this will be enough to power up the computer-brain interface device. What Else is Potentially Possible? Well, here is where we get Sci Fi real quick; you might even use such an interface to make yourself invisible to the observer by deleting your image through a wireless command to their device to quickly overwhelm temporarily the processing in that part of their brain. Many believe that you can move your thoughts away from a situation and prevent yourself from being seen or sensed. Is this how the Indians do it when hunting animals and the animal does not ever see them? Once we determine which part of their brain lights up and you can reverse engineer that biological brain function with electrical stimulus, this too will be possible. How Long Until We Get Computer Brain Interfaces The military will most likely have these technology tools first, but eventually through the current transfer technology channels they will be available to the general public and perhaps you really will have iPod on the brain; nano style with digital ports to your organic mind. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

computer motherboards For Your Reading PleasureComputer Repair Services And Market Segments
Computer repair services are critical to the industry. As a computer repair services provider, knowing your market segments can help you find customers that need your make this job even easier.
Determining Market Segments
When you are determining market segments, you should think about three factors. Answering three ?w? questions - ?Who?? ?What?? and ?Why?? - will allow you to concentrate on clients that are in most need of computer repair services. Creative approaches to marketing and sales will give you a much more targeted customer base.
Who Needs Services?
You can learn more about who the customer you're looking for is by thinking about geography, lifestyle and personality. The customer might live in a rural area or in a strong community. What is the customer's lifestyle? Find out what his hobbies, social activities, television viewing habits and other interests are. Lastly, what is his personality? If you understand a customer's habits, you can custom fit computer repair services to his needs.
What Kind Of Services?
If you offer computer repair services, think about pricing, delivery, packaging and features you will offer. Then help fit these with the needs of each market segment. Some segments might want a very cost effective repair service, while some might rather pay extra for additional features and benefits. If you know what each client needs, you will be able to deliver the best services.
Why Do They Need Services?
Computer repair services are most needed by those that lack knowledge of technology. Occasionally, however, clients might have computer knowledge but lack the time to deal with them personally. You should know what is causing each segment to seek your assistance so you can best satisfy specific needs.
Learning more about your market segments should be the primary focus when you are deciding how to offer computer repair services. Becoming intimately familiar with who the customer is, what services he needs and why he needs them will create a satisfied customer and good business.

Starting Your Own Computer Repair Business
You have a passion for working on a computer and you like fixing computer problems. Time to open your own computer repair business right? Well... Make sure you have good answers for the following questions.
How badly do you want it? Starting a business is not for the faint of heart. You'll work lots of hours for lots of months before you'll be making a good living. You'll also have to go out and make lots of sales calls and endure some less than nice people in the process. If you have the stomach and the guts to push through that, you are on the right path, read on.
Once you've determined that you are serious about this business thing, you'll need to make sure you have enough money to do it right. Remember that most people underestimate the amount of money it will take to run a business. It's easy to think that you won't need much but consider some basic costs. You'll need some money for computer parts. You'll most likely need either a cell phone and a landline phone or both. You'll need to consider expenses like gas for your vehicle and some advertising expenses that will cover at least a basic form of advertising like flyers and the yellow pages.
Consider the tools you'll need as well. Things like some screwdrivers, some extra parts like some extra computer cases, computer screws, magnifying glass, flashlight, duct tape, overalls, business cards, and a carrying case to name a few items. There is nothing worse than not having the tools you need to do business. Not only will you lose time, you could also potentially lose the respect of your customer. This in turn can lead to either loosing their business or at the very least making it less likely they'll refer more business your way.

Hide Your Important Computer Documents in Seconds
Today, computers have totally changed the way we work in our offices. We now use a computer for all possible functions such as saving our business details, storing our passwords, keeping record of our tax details and even critical financial information.
What is the concern about?
It is a well-known fact that every well-established business or workplace is always under the risk of some unethical practices. You constantly live under the fear that an unauthorized user will gain access to your private and important documents and can possibly harm you.
Almost all of us are invariably short of time when working in our office environment. We are always chasing some sort of a timeline or trying to finish some work in hand. In such a scenario, we need a solution that will help us safeguard our information but not consume much of our time.
What we want is an option that will enable us to protect our documents in a short span of time and with a small amount of effort.
Simple precautions you must take
The simplest precaution you can take to protect the important documents on your computer is to organize them properly in to folder and files. You must store all the important files and folders according to their subject or category, so that they can be easily hidden or protected together.
The above especially holds true if you are sharing your computer with a roommate or a colleague and you do not want others to see your important documents.
Once you have taken these precautions, it becomes quite easy to apply special systems on your computer that will help you to hide your sensitive information.
Privacy software
There are special software packages available in the market for solving this issue. Such software is not only very efficient in protecting your important documents, but using them is also highly easy and convenient. All you have to do is to install them on your computer and you save all your important documents in matter of seconds.
What you need to do is to research the internet for a suitable folder hiding software. Read up a few websites on the subject and you will be able to understand the features properly.
Alternatively, you can also contact your local computer software supplier for some options. Most of the internet suppliers of privacy software have the provision of a trial version.
You can download such trial versions from the internet totally free of cost. The trial version is available for use only for a limited period of time, which usually lasts up to 20 days. After this, you need to purchase the software from your vendor.

Mailto:ameenah@earthlink.net Words count: 529 words incl. Resource box Format: 60 characters/line How The Use of Your Computer May Cause You Serious Injury by: Ameenah Lutfee copyright 2002 Dont take my word for it, here are some staggering statistics on the use of computers: 1. Costs in direct workers compensation has exceeded a staggering 20 billion thus far. 2. There are over 100 different injuries that can result from repetitive motions which cause wear and tear on the body. 3. Liberty Mutual spend a whopping $50,000,000 yearly on wrist injury claims. 4. The increased use of your computer from 1 to hours a day enhances the risk of your acquiring an injury rise from 45% to 92%. Over the past 20 years, ergonomic injuries (over exertion and /or repetitive motion) have gained recognition as a major factor in workplace health costs to the United States. With the increased use of computers in both homes and businesses, you and I are in an exceedingly vulnerable position. According to statistics, 50% of U.S. households use the internet, while 23 million adults use a computer everyday. In addition, 89% of teens use computers frequently during the week and over 50% of children use computers in their classrooms. With these statistics, it is clear that computer use is on the rise. One recent study even showed that more than 700 new households are connected to the internet every hour. Far too many computer users are experiencing CTDs (Cumulative Trauma Disorders). CTDs are the result of repeated motions, excessive force, vibration, awkward positions and over exertion. Here are some CTDs: a) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Nerve disorder in wrist(s) and hand(s) b) Tendinitis Inflammation of a tendon from repeated tensing c) Tenosynovitis Compression of the nerve and blood vessel between the neck and shoulder d) Ulnar Neuritis A nerve inflammation that results from pressure on the Ulnar Nerve (located between the wrist and the elbow) over time, including leaning the elbow or hard or sharp surface for log periods e) Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Compression of the nerves and blood vessels between the neck and shoulder. Symptoms include numbness in the fingers and tingling in the arms. Now some say computers are both a curse and a blessing, but Ill let you decide that. Undoubtedly, computer use has significantly increased productivity and efficiency in all aspects of your life. With the inordinate number of injuries suffered by computer users each day, its important that you be aware of Ergonomics. Ergonomics deals with the interrelation between people and machines and their work environment. Ergonomics is all about working smarter and safer. You have permission to publish this article (formatted to 60 characters, approx) electronically or in print. If it helps others "out there" in any way, then we're happy. "We share what we know, so that others may grow." HOW TO "WRITE TO WIN" - WHAT ARE THE "SECRETS" OF WRITING SUCCESS? by Craig Lock "If a man has talent and cannot use it, he has failed. If he has a talent and uses only half of it, he has partly failed. If he has a talent and learns somehow to use the whole of it, he has gloriously succeeded and has a satisfaction and a triumph few men ever know." - Thomas Wolfe "Everyone has a talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads." - Erica Jong Funnily enough, I don't believe there are any magic 'secrets' to writing success. If so, I'm still trying to discover them. So I'll cover this subject very briefly, because I don't know the answers. It's really all common sense, following your basic instincts and having a bit of fun at the same time. Just BE YOU and write what your heart, your imagination tells you to write. The writer or author is a puppeteer, moulding the clay through the words that you choose. You weave the strands of the article or story together, through use of your creative imagination. You start your article, short story or novel with an idea. You decide HOW you will start: "Once upon a time". (This could be the little child emerging from the depths of your soul). Sounds very "airy-fairy" that, like many "arty farty writer types"! You perhaps got the plot from a television programme or a newspaper article. The plots of some of my novels came from newspaper articles. Then you make choices as you go along: to base your story upon fact or fiction, or faction (a mixture of fact and fiction - I like that genre (impressive word that - must use it more often!). You choose the track. You are the director, producer and actor: YOU set the scene, decide whether it is to be local or foreign. It's up to you HOW you describe the landscape or surrounding environment. You decide on the characters and how you will describe them. To let them live or die? What immense power you have to determine destinies! Whether to have a happy or sad ending? "And they all lived happily ever after...." A few short words of advice to end off this lesson... Make your writing FUN and get readers (and the editor) "hooked" with a good opening paragraph and an even better opening line. What do you think of this example by Charles Dickens from "A Tale of Two Cities"? "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." I find it excellent and powerful writing; but quite "heavy reading". What did you think of that style of writing? How's this for an opening line for a novel? "James walked into the hotel and it was as if he was struck by a bolt of lightning. He instantly went into a state of shock, as the past ten years of his life flashed through his mind, as in an instant replay. It was too much to all take in in a second. His legs began to tremble, as if they had turned into instant jelly. They could barely hold his slight frame, as he struggled with all his might to hold his body upright. Out of his numbness he could see seated at the end of the bar the face of the man that was indelibly printed on the deepest recesses of his subconscious mind, the striking features that had haunted him all those years. It was the same mysterious man, who in an instant had turned his entire world upside down and consumed James's every waking thought for the past decade." Was that "a bit over-the-top" writing? "Did I need to say "mysterious man"? Do you want to read on? Perhaps that could be the first paragraph of my next book? Would you be interested in reading a book with a beginning, like that? Or this one from my novel "Angolan Dawn" "It was just getting light with that certain freshness in the air of early morning. Albertina Kangombe saw the figure of her husband Marcelino receding in the distance down the sandy track, walking slowly down the gentl |
