Just look inside a computer case. At first glance, all those wires and components can look terrifyingly complex. And thinking about putting them all together by yourself may seem impossible.

Not to worry! Even though they are the products of advanced technology, the various pieces of a personal computer (PC) fit together with simple connections. If you can use a screwdriver and follow simple instructions, you can build your own PC.

Don't be intimidated by the task of connecting the computer components together. Many of the internal connections are molded so that it is impossible to fit them together the wrong way. If you have ever assembled a child's toy, you are more than capable of assembling a computer.


Advantages Of Building Your Own

You are probably asking yourself why anyone would bother to build a PC. After all, you can buy a cheap computer in almost any retail store.

If cost is your only consideration, you probably are better off buying one of those cheap machines. But if you have any special requirements for software or hardware, youll benefit from the total control over the type and quality of components you get from building your own PC.

The first thing to remember about computers is that they are machines. They do not have feelings, they do not respond to emotional appeals, they only do what they are told to do; nothing more and nothing less. Thus, you need to remember that just about anything that your computer does is probably something you told it to do. Sure, you may not have wanted to tell it to do something, but you told the computer to do it and that's all it knows. You can save yourself a lot of computer stress by keeping this in mind.

The next thing you need to know in order to avoid computer stress is that computers are machines and, therefore, they will break down. That means that you need to keep backup copies of everything important. If you absolutely need a file, keep a copy on a floppy disk or on a CD. Hard drives are well known to just give out after a while (the average lifetime is about 4-5 years) and therefore you need to keep backups of everything you want to keep. If it's important enough that you want a copy, it's important enough to keep a backup copy. The sooner you remember to keep your computer's failing in mind, the more stress free you will be.

Third, you need to protect your computer. On the most basic level, that means a surge protector. A power surge can quickly fry the delicate insides of a computer and suddenly realizing that you need a new computer is just about the worst computer stress of all.

As well, you need to protect your computer from outside interference. If your computer is hooked up to the Internet, protect it with a network firewall and anti-virus software. This may not seem like a big deal to some, but it can damage your computer in the long run.

Why Do Computer Users Need Backup

First what?s the meaning of backup? Back up is the name given to diskettes, or disks that can store copies of programs and then stored elsewhere.

Even with the best of care, any disk can suddenly fail for reasons you can?t understand. Many computer users have found themselves unable to retrieve data from disks that worked perfectly the day before, because some defect has damaged a single track or small sector. Hard disks do crash. Any personal computer system can be hit by power overloads, water or misconducts.

Thus, users and big or small companies should always think about backup. The best protection if you?re writing, designing, researching something is to make two copies of your data. One copy may be on your hard disk, certainly, but duplicates should be on tape, disks or removable hard disks cartridges, recordable CD-ROMs or flash drives.

If you are backing up less than 10MB, you can use diskettes since that is the most they can take, if you are backing up more than 10MB, then a tape, disks or flash drives can be more efficient. If you work with files daily, then you would be most secure if you backed up all your files every day. If you work with files only occasionally, you need to determine how often backup is needed. And remember to keep the backup media in a different place. If your computer system and your backup disks are in the some structure and the place burns down, your backup is obviously worthless. So consider moving them to a different place or location.

Some microcomputer software programs provide automatic backup. One program would be with Colorado scheduler. What you do is you insert your disk in the disk drive and with a single mouse click on the Colorado scheduler icon, the computer takes care of the backup.

Almost all large computer systems have scheduled automatic backup of either full backup or only those files that have changed since the last backup session.

You should note that some storage media?s last longer than others. We have seen tapes deteriorate day by day. And will eventually deteriarate in the next 5 years. But this also depends on how it?s stored. Hard disks cartridges have shelf life of about 10 years, according to most hard disks manufactures. You can get MO drives but they are more expensive yet also more durable.

The life span of a CD-ROM disk is almost unlimited. Thus you need to archive your backup material before deciding on a storage medium.

Now, be sure to have a timed backup strategy. By this, if you add and change data every day, set your backup software (if you have one) to back up those files every night. And you could keep two storage cartridges: a working one and one stored in safe place. Then exchange the cartridges on weekly bases.

Backing up your information and research has to be a must in your life. If you have not lost any work due to computer crushes, disk damage, or viruses then you better backup you data before it happens. Don?t wait for it to happen to you.

Regardless as to how prideful you are when it comes to the skills you have whilst on your computer or surfing the internet, the fact is that you will be at risk from spyware and adware every time that you log on. Here are a few things that you may want to keep checking on your computer in order to prevent spyware.

One way that you can tell if you have any spyware running in the background on your computer is if your keep noticing those annoying pop-ups appear without even having your preferred web browser open. Anybody that has a DSL or high-speed connection now know that they can be constantly connected to the internet whether intended or not so you must protect against this. Even though you may always be connected you should not ever have pop-ups appear on your screen unless you are actual surfing the internet at the particular moment. Otherwise, you most definitely have some form of spyware on your computer and you should use a spyware program to detect it right away.

Most of these spyware programs will attempt to run in the darkness without you having any clue that they are there so an occasional check now and than will not hurt.

If you always keep track of exactly all the additional software that you have installed on your computer since new, than it tends to be easier to notice when a new program appears on your computer, which may turn out to be spyware. Checking the list of programs on your computer can be done by simply viewing the Add / Remove programs area in the control panel.

If you start to notice that your computer is starting to run a lot slower than normal or freezing up at every possible turn, which is extremely annoying and frustrating, it may indicate that you have a spyware problem on your computer. Many of these programs can be more than just harmful to your computer; they can be extremely demanding on the memory now that a parasite has attached itself and taking up valuable memory space. By constantly staying on top of what you have installed on your computer you can head this off at the pass.

If you are unfortunate to discover a spyware program on your computer it may be possible to remove it without needing to purchase or download any anti-spyware programs from the internet. Not surprisingly, many people fear the thought of having to download something in the attempt to correct another problem caused by a download. Who is to say that the people selling the proposed solution are not the same ones that originally created the problem? Computer Upgrade - DVD-ROM Required for Microsoft's Vista

Microsoft?s Vista is so large the company was forced to issue it on DVD. There are a generation of computers that have at least the minimum necessary processor and system memory, but were sent from the factory with a CD burner. People owning these machines will have to upgrade to a CD/DVD, or stick with Windows XP.

Installing a CD/DVD is a simple task that can be done in less than 30 minutes. There?s no need to send the unit to a repair shop. All that is required is a screwdriver and a little common sense.

The CD burner will have 3 cables running to it; a power cable, a ribbon cable, and a sound cable. These must be disconnected.

Four screws hold the CD-ROM in place, two on each side. Take these loose with a Phillips screwdriver. The unit can then be slid out the front of the case.

Installing the new CD/DVD is essentially the reverse of taking out the old unit. But before you install it, check to make sure the jumpers on the new unit are set to match the old one. For instance, if the old drive had the jumper set to ?slave?, the new one should be set to ?slave? as well.

Now slide the CD/DVD in the front of the case, and station it there with the four screws you removed earlier.

Re-attach the cables. Start with the sound cable, because it is the hardest to reach. It will be plugged in with its white wire turned toward the center of the unit.

The IDE ribbon cable is next. You will notice there is one blank spot in the plug. This blank matches a missing pin in the CD/DVD?s cable port, preventing you from plugging it in the wrong way.

The power cable, usually a Molex D, will only fit one way. So it is impossible to connect backwards.

With everything connected, you are ready to boot up. When you do, XP?s Plug and Play feature will tell you ?New Hardware Found?, and load a standard driver.

You?re in business, ready to install Vista.

So you've bought your computer and want to get online? It's not as simple as connect the wire and off you go these day's. The internet is a weird and wonderful place as long as you can control what you do.

That's why you need to protect yourself. These can be done in a number of steps.

Step 1: Anti-Virus Scanner

Whether your connecting to the internet or not, you need an Anti-Virus scanner. Your computer can become infected with "viruses". These are little files or codes that have been written to ruin your computer! That's why they must be stopped!

There are many programs out there that can help, but it's best to trust only the mainstream programs as these are used widely and updated regularly.

Step 2: Firewall

Ok so your thinking what is a "firewall" sounds scary right? Well it's not really. It is again another line of defence against the number of way's your computer can be attacked. In simple terms it blocks other computers and programs from connecting to you and playing with your stuff. Think of it as an internet wall of fire, where you allow what can pass through.

Software - Again there are many programs available to protect you, Recent Microsoft Windows machines come with Windows Firewall, which can be described as basic at best. We do recommend you go for mainstream again.

Hardware - A firewall can also be included as part of your hardware, like an internet router "that's the box that sit's between your pc and the internet line". This is the best and recommended way to have a firewall. As it blocks intruders before it get's to your pc.
